When will we have Octoprint support?

THere doesn't appear to be any sort of connectivity options with the Mini. I'm tired of pulling the USB stick in and out. Why is it so locked down? Can't see mesh bed level data etc. There appears to be a micro-usb connection but I tried connecting with Pronterface with little success. Can someone confirm if this is currently possible? Any sort of connectivity to this machine at all?

That's one of the bad things on early bird picks. But as they said, I don't think we have to wait that long on a firmware update. Can't wait for the esp01 feature 🤪

It’s better to give than to receive. Especially advice....

There is a sneak peek in the blog, where Josef shows their own implementation called PrusaConnect.

But looks very basic.

The fact it looks basic may be optimal for many people, estecially newcommers. It has functionality necessery to make it print and monitor what's going on. That does not exclude possibility of being able to have it remotely controlled by more advanced tool, octoprint or other - after all it is aiming for printer farms too.

Has every single Prusa printer release been locked down initially? Were early adopters of the mk2/3 not able to connect their printers to their pc?

RE: When will we have Octoprint support?

Mk2 / Mk3 printers cannot connect natively. All they have is a usb port, so connectivity had to be provided by adding on a Raspberry Pi - which could also run Octoprint. You would connect to the Pi and control the printer from Octoprint on the Pi which operated the printer via USB.

I have not seen anything yet to say something like a Pi can connect via USB to the Mini, or if Octoprint is compatible. Personally I think that is doubtful as the Mini has its own built in LAN (and wifi coming). I believe Prusa will provide printer control onboard via its own app PrusaConnect.

I’m not sure I would have ordered a mini if I knew I couldn’t issue terminal command with Pronterface at lease which is I believe is still part of the official software download package. This is very limiting for more experienced folks. The hardware “tab/fuse” that was kept a secret would have tipped people off that issuing commands to the printer would naturally be disabled as changing something in firmware and saving with M500 would be sorta of like running custom firmware. If I could break the tab today and have octoprint and usb connectivity I’d do it in two seconds. Machine feels very closed at the moment.

It may indeed be that breaking the fuse will be required to access this functionality if it is present. We will have to wait and see what comes I guess for this and the other promised updates to the firmware for power-panic etc. I fully expect to be updating the Mini firmware every few days 🙂

I assume that Prusa have not implemented CDC on the USB port, just Mass Storage.

No reason in principle why you could not implement Ethernet on the Raspberry running Octoprint.

RE: When will we have Octoprint support?

Personally, I have two separate use cases:

  1. Octoprint at home -- I already own 2 Prusas (MK2.5S + MK3S) and each is using an RPi + Octoprint to provide connectivity and monitoring. I bought the Prusa Mini for my wife, and I'd like to be able to manage it the same way as my other printers.
  2. Prusa Connect / Print Farm at the makerspace -- our local makerspace has a collection of 3D printers, and we've order a pair of Prusa Minis as the trial of deploying a managed print farm instead of manual access to the older printers. We want to use Prusa Connect to manage the general use printers.

Use case #1 will need to emulate the current Gcode streams interface without interfering with Use case #2.

RE: When will we have Octoprint support?

I'm curious why Prusa didn't partner with Gina and embed OctoPrint within their printers.  That would have been such a great thing, instead of competing with an already thriving open-source community.   I remember when Pi Zero + OctoPrint was touted as the next great feature on the MK3 (though the Zero was woefully underpowered for the task).

I'd REALLY love to see Prusa step up and contribute to OctoPrint, which they definitely benefit from (it's the reason I got my MK2 in the first place) instead of throwing together their own software, which helps nobody but Prusa owners.  I can say this much, OctoPrint support is on my must-have feature list, and I won't be able to recommend this printer until it is capable of supporting it.  It would take YEARS for their own implementation to even approach what OctoPrint already supports, and doesn't even include the HUGE number of plugins available (some SPECIFIC to prusa printers, in fact, like the recently released NYLOCk mod plugin).

I'm sure part of the consideration regarding USB streaming support is just the speed of serial communication.  However, assisting to implement some faster protocol (which I am 100% sure the OctoPrint community would LOVE to do, and I know they have many ideas) would have been better for everyone, plus it could still be (at least temporarily) a Prusa only feature.

Anyway, my 2cents.

Prusa is going their own path. Look at Marlin and Slic3r.

Octoprint has one big disadvantage. It requires good hardware to run all the nice plugins. I think Prusa would like to handle everything on one board and right now printing + octoprint on one board is not cost efficient to realize.

I don't agree. I'd like Octoprint and my printer to remain separate. It's easier to trouble shoot and I can choose the hardware (i.e. upgrade).
I do need Octoprint support for my mini though. I'll be patient. I got the mini before Christmas and it's as promised.

At least with Slic3r and Marlin they forked the offical repos, giving the original owners the opportunity to reintegrate new features if they choose.  The open nature of the hardware/software is what lured me into the Prusa community in the first place, and this is a step away from that.  I REALLY hope Prusa doesn't end up going the MakerBot route.

We all hope that :).

On the current Mini board STM32F407VGT6  MCU is running. Not sure if you could run octoprint (current version) at all on it. I see MicroPython could be used but not sure how big the migration effort is for that. I think this was the main reason for the decision doing something different and in smaller scale.

RE: When will we have Octoprint support?

I’m waiting on a mini that will be my first printer, so forgive the noob observations. If PR has PrusaConnect, that is sophisticated enough to run one of the largest 3D print farms, would it be correct to assume that it will likely do a good deal of what Octoprint does? Does Octoprint allow you to easily manage a print farm now? If not, it seems that PR has grown to a point where they may not want to be limited by or wait on a third party vendor to add features to the software that is becoming a feature that customers are starting to expect/demand. Plus, they will be able to optimize their software for their printers for optimal performance.

Also, if PR releases the PrusaConnect as open source, then Octoprint will be a able to benefit from PR’s contribution even if they choose to move away from Octoprint.

I think PR is taking a page out of Apple’s playbook by bringing the key technologies/software/etc, in-house that are key to the customer’s experience and as a way to differentiate themselves from the hoard of cheap 3D printers on the market.

Keep in mind that PrusaConnect is evolved from the software that Prusa uses to manage its own print farm (500+ printers and growing). OctoPrint and PrusaConnect serve different needs, and are driven by different requirements. My hope is that PrusaConnect and OctoPrint can operate side-by-side without conflicts.

RE: When will we have Octoprint support?

Personally the principle reason for running something like Octoprint is that it is independent of the processor running the printer.

So, does it or doesn't? Does it work through the micro USB port?
