RE: Specific silicon socks for Mini

@mog Thank you! I've just made some more and I poured it into the big end with the plunger out, which kind of worked although there were air pockets. I will know how they came out in the morning. I might have to try some in a tube, because even though CNC Kitchen said it was messier, the whole process is messy already! 😂

@mog

I am using almost the same silicone and it keeps getting stuck on the mold. I haven't tried adding glycerin just soapy water but with no effect. It keeps messing up.

I will try pure glycerin.

@geoper2

I "painted" the whole inside with glycerin as well.   Maybe that was why mine worked? I don't know what I'm doing so I did that in addition to putting two drops in the silicone and mixing.  I let it sit in the garage for 25 hours and then opened it up and pulled it out pretty easily.  I needed to trim it to make it look ok.

I've attached some more pictures since I have them 🙂

Have you tried a silicone spray like this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ILY1TU2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have been using it and not had any sticking problems, I've made about 10 socks now.

@robee

I haven't used anything like that. I will search for it! Thanks for the recommendation.

I would very much like to buy 3 of the socks, anyone happy to make and send to the UK? I have no other use for silicone at the moment so I'd rather not waste the material!

If anyone is willing to ship one to me in the US, I would like to buy a sock for my Mini. Thanks!

Hi,

have people tried TPU for the mould - is it a better choice than PLA ?

I haven't tried TPU, but PLA worked so perfectly I think it couldn't be any better. TPU is more expensive and maybe not as precise so I imagine it might make for rougher moulds?

Also you will probably want to print a few moulds, maybe 3 at the minimum because it's hard to get the right amount of silicone mixed.

I ordered one from Thomas L off the "Prusa Mini Users" group on Facebook a few months ago.  Excellent product. He's due to launch his website for ordering any day now: https://shop.levendigdsgn.com/   He's in the Netherlands but ships worldwide for a very reasonable price.

Thanks @philipe! Placed an order for 4. Will also order some silicone for molding. New skill to be acquired 😉

@philipe

See some people producing quite some socks here already! I've made over 500 socks at the moment, about 475 of which have been sold and some failed (or going to be sold as b quality since they will work perfectly fine)

My website https://shop.levendigdsgn.com has been launched and it's possible to place a backorder for almost all colours!

@benji

Do you mind sharing your STL or STEP files?  I would love to print and cast my own as well.  How did you get the dimensions for the heatblock to model it?

How large of a syringe did you guys use? I had been wondering how the rtv got in. Won't the nozzle applicator work for one time at least?

thanks

I use 10ml syringes, but for a single mould, you could also use a 5ml syringe. Just don't fill them fully up, so you can use some space to generate a vacuum (like in the video).

The syringe is easy to clean, so you can use it again and again.

So just made my sock.  We will see in 24 hours how it goes.  I coated the inside of the mold with glycerin as suggested by @ mog.  I used the rtv nozzle to put rtv into the syringeit was easy peasy.
