RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

I know people are saying it has to be torx and hex will not work, but I used these hex ones and they are perfectly flush, maybe it's the profile that is important and being hex doesn't automatically mean they aren't?

i haven't received them or done the mod yet, but here's what i ordered on amazon for torx screws. slow, slow delivery though. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DEUBWMM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Ya those are coming from China. So super slow delivery. I found some in California off of walmart marketplace that show 2 weeks to deliver. So I bought those.

Ya I agree. I don't think all Hex head are going to be the same. They use hex head stock and they sit perfectly flush. Granted they are not the correct length but it shows they do work.

@jagr_200

Stock screws are not hex, they are torx. The heated bed is the only place they are used.

I did not buy them yet, but according to all tables as long as it is a DIN 965 screw it is irrelevant whether it is Torx or Hex. The dimensions seem to be exactly the same.

I think I can top that 😉

But I have to admit it took me almost 4 hours to get it like that 😅

How do you get the color scale to display a different scale then the plot? Your color scale goes from 0 to 0.04 and the plot still displays -2 to 2. If i change the Z scale in the settings it changes everything.

I just finished the mod and posted some feedback in Issues on the Github i think the guide could be simplified in the "getting materials" part and clarified in some steps of the Levelling.

Otherwise it went smooth and i want to thank for it. My results are not stellar but i got to 3-8 degrees maximum rotation recommendations on all screws. Stopped there.

A new guy question:

Right now I have the bed with 0.499 mm between the lowest point and the highest

But on the other hand, I'm honestly a bit afraid to mess this fine and working printer.

how bad is my current state?
is this mod a must-have? or do-it-if-something-isn't-working?

TIA

IMO, If your printer is working then no need to mess with it. I only did this mod as my printer was not producing functional prints.

Can you print a 180 x 180cm 1 layer sheet? If not, can you work around that limitation by avoiding the sections that fail? If you answered no to both of those questions, this mod can help you out.

Otherwise there is no real reason to do it other than just wanting to have as level a bed as possible.

I'll be attempting this this weekend or so depending on when i get the hose (finally got the torx screws.) is octoprint or pronterface preferred? Octoprint setup seems  overly complex since it'd be running on a windows desktop, and pronterface hasn't been updated in three years, I think.

Sorry for the late reply... that was an older version of the Bed Visualizer plug-in... they've changed that now. 😕

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

did the mod today, but am getting a strange result with one screw, middle right side. just always says +.17 or thereabout, no matter how much I tighten it. like, I could visibly see the heated bed was warped but it still said that. I of course loosened it. at this point i've had to stop for the night, but i'm at a los what to do to get flat.

here's my before (after I'd installed the silicon tubing):

and the current after:

Hmm. I wonder if you are not trying to correct a non perpendicular XYZ axis "problem" with this mod..? I would check if all is square and then perhaps try again. You could loosen the two screws on the XZ structure, reposition it a bit while looking from above and from side and retighten the screw by quarter turn one by one till stiff plus one quarter. Then maybe try again. I am a newbie. I think it could be it.

figured out my issue. the u-bolt on the right side rail was long enough it was preventing the bed from lowering in that spot. a little VERY CAREFUL hand filing and it's sorted.

much much better results tonight, though not as good as OP's. but just some time needed, i think.

First adjustments and measurement (10 minutes worktime) with the Octoprint Bed Visualizer directly after the assembly of the modified Mini with the "spring mod" made of hardened steel springs from Gutekunst:

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

impressive, michae.

mines coming along but not that good yet. adjusting that bolt used up most of my time last night...

also, i swear to god, the mesh bed leveling on the machine doesn't do anything to compensate. like, the probe goes around and measures, but when printing, there's no compensation by the hotend.
