Why does the console open when I open a PS .3mf project?

If I open a .3mf project saved from PS by double clicking or "open with", the console launches in the background. If I close the console window the project closes. This happens on one of my computers but not the other. Any reason for this behavior? Any settings I'm missing?

Thanks

Best Answer by Antonio:

Maybe on the other comupter the .3mf files are set to be opened with prusa-slicer-console.exe instead of prusa-slicer.exe

if it is the case, right click on the .3mf file -> open with -> and select prusa-slicer.exe

Strange behaviour. Are you using windows or mac on both?

You can check the release version going on Help -> About PS

.3mf is technically an archive format.  Not all operating systems recognise this.

Both are Windows 10 x64 computers running PS v2.3.0. The .3mf file is saved from PS as a project with a simple .stl from the build plate. On the main computer I use most, the file opens PS with a double-click. On the other computer, the console opens up first, then PS starts and opens the project. PS works properly, just that the console is hanging around in the background. Not a pressing problem, just curious as to why different behavior.

Grazie Antonio. This did turn out to be the problem. Windows 10 behavior with default programs has changed from earlier versions. On the problem computer the default app association listed two versions labelled "Prusa Slicer". One of these was tied to "prusa-slicer-console.exe" but you can't tell which one. When looking at the file association, it only says Prusa Slicer. There does not appear to be a way to select a .exe file from the hard drive, only the apps that Windows has detected. Problem solved. Thank you.

If you right click on a 3mf file and choose Open With from the menu it opens up the list of apps windows thinks will open the file.
However you can select Choose Another App.  That opens up yet another window with other apps (theres also a tickbox for always use this app).  If you scroll down there is often a 'more' option, you want to click it  and scroll down the list until it brings up a dialog with an option for "Look for another App on this PC"

Once you finally get that you can browse to whatever .exe you want.  It will then use that to open the file.  If you had the tickbox selected for always use this app then it will in effect reassign the default program to whatever you selected.  This means you dont have to do so again.

That is certainly the behavior I'm used to and have used it often in the past. However, my current copy of Windows 10 (2004 build 19041.928) simply doesn't give me the option to "Look for another App on this PC", only search the Windows app store. If I wanted to associate the file with an app that is not in the list, I don't know how I would do it. I googled this and it seems to be a common problem.

Aha and Eureka. It turns out either by design, oversight or something else, the friggin text for additional options in the "Open With" dialog box is either hidden, or the same color as the background. Thank you Microsoft, wth! Once I clicked in the "white" area with no text, I was able to select files from PC. See pic.

I believe that when no app has been associated with a file type, Windows simply asks you to visit the store. The 'official' bypass is by going into control panel or its equivalent and selecting the extension and choosing the default app.

That you don't have a default app - or it was lost (usually 3D Viewer or Paint 3D are defaults),  you might also consider going to the store and grabbing 3D Builder. It's free, and seems to be a better STL error checker than NetFabb. It'll install and take over the extension - but I find that reasonable because it provides a link to the OS where the icon is now a live tile snip showing the part inside.
