Top layer patterns

A while back I opined on the utility of being able to choose differing bottom layer patterns. (See https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/english-forum-general-discussion-announcements-and-releases/bottom-layer-fill-patterns/). My contention was (and remains) that choosing a bottom layer other than rectangular seems to me to be a "why bother" option because the detail in these patterns is largely obliterated by the surface of the build plate, be it smooth or textured. The several responses in the thread did little to alter my thoughts on the contention, and I largely put it out-of-mind for the time being. Since then I have not changed my thoughts on the (non) utility of non-rectangular bottom layers, but have turned my attention to the top layer patterns, specifically how they are created and chosen for inclusion in the selection menu. I find the look of the default rectangular bottom layer as modulated by the powder-coated/textured build plate to be visually very pleasing. There are many times that I wish the finished top layer/surface of my print could look substantially similar to the bottom "pebbled" appearance. So how can this be accomplished? How are these various patterns conceived and implemented? Is there any reason why surface patterns could not also be incorporated into the outer vertical shells and perimeters? Is this a topic I should raise in gitHub?

RE: Top layer patterns

Cura has something called fuzzy skin I beleive (never used it) and there is an open issue on Github ( https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/2010 ) to add the feature to slicer. There some new options for surface finish coming in the next version of slicer but I don't think this is amongst them.

@gordon-w

Thanks for the link; I just added my endorsement for the feature.
