Slicer has problems to do letters on Z.

I currently switched to PS from S3D because there is simply no improvement since years. Even though.. its still the better, faster slicer i must say.

After some fixes its running now and i wanted to give it a chance.

Here is my big issue i can't solve:

There is simply no way to tell the program to slice a W correct. It's always missing 2 lines. What could i do about it?

Thin walls are ticked - but i don't think the problem is there, because the rest of the letter is fine.

The print results are the same.... i'm stuck. (ofcourse S3D  hast no problem to do this correct...)

It would be helpful if you would save your part & settings in a 3MF project file, zip it and attach it here so we can see the settings you are using.

Yes, I'm curious.  I'll give it a shot if you post a file I can try.

My hunch is an issue with the .stl file and not with the slicer.

I'm currently running a print which Prusaslicer did not slice as expected, but Cura did.  The .stl file has issues, some which were easy to fix, but for this particular case, Cura is more forgiving.  This is one downloaded from Thingiverse, so I do not have the original cad files.

@jsw

The files are processed by Fusion 360 - there is no problem with these 😉 believe me.
Any other slicer can handle it.

Here is a box with M and Ws... same results

RE: Slicer has problems to do letters on Z.

Here's a quickie test ...

My Prusaslicer definitely shows the gaps in the preview.  Cura does not show the gaps in the preview.

Both show the correct shapes before slicing.  Neither slicer complained about .stl errors.

I want to play around with this a while and see if I can figure out anything.  It may one of those somewhat unclearly defined cases that the slicers are handling differently.

And that's how it prints... :/

Where is the 3MF?

It WAS posted above.  I grabbed it a few minutes ago.

Try the attached .stl file please.

I ran it through my Freecad workflow which seems to fix almost all wonky but not totally damaged .stl files, as in convert mesh to shape -> refine shape -> convert to solid and then re-export.

It sliced fine on my version of Prusaslicer.

Disabling Print Settings->Layers and perimeters->Quality->Detect thin walls seems to help:

RE: Slicer has problems to do letters on Z.

Here's another similar example, the second time this happened on a project I am working on.  This is when printing a model I downloaded from Thingiverse, which is here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4576135

I'm scaling this up to O scale from HO, using the common 1.81 fudge factor for X and Y, and a larger one for Z, to compensate for the added roadbed I have.  I've done these scalings several times before with other models and they do not introduce errors such as this.  This only appears on pair of the diagonal pieces, with all of the others rendered as expected.

When slicing with Prusaslicer, even after using the Prusaslicer 'fix it' option, I get the following in the preview:

Notice the piece hanging in mid air on the diagonal toward the top of the screencap and the missing piece from the diagonal below it.  The 'detect thin walls' did not make any difference either way.

However, when using Cura, it rendered those sections as expected in the preview:

The way I understand the operation of a slicer is that for each 'slice' or layer, it should generate the gcode to extrude the filament wherever the plane of the layer is coincident with one of the facets of the mesh defined in the .stl file.

Now just for grins, keeping this in mind, I tried slicing over in Prusaslicer using layer sizes everywhere from .05mm up to .3mm, thinking maybe I could coax some coincidence into the missing sections.  Nope! Same thing no matter how thinly or coarsely I sliced it.

I'm a bit puzzled as to how a file which contains facets that are recognized to be in a certain place by one slicer is not properly rendered by another slicer.

As a total aside, on my first print of the other dock section, I was VERY impressed at the quality of the bridged horizontal section that the MK3S produced.  No significant drooping at all and no filing/sanding/whatever needed.

RE: Slicer has problems to do letters on Z.

JSW that attached  test stl file has the following issues -
91 non manifold edges, 776 intersecting faces, 409 zero faces and 2 zero edges.  That is according to Blenders 3dprint tool.

Running the clean up tool in Blender reduces the issues to  778 intersecting faces, 421 zero faces and after exporting a new stl and then slicing it slices fine.  So its the non manifold edges that were the biggest issue.

The original Korper1.stl from the original 3mf file actually has less issues, it only has 24 intersecting faces so it manifold.  However it seems the intersecting faces are on those areas of the letters where slicer is having trouble.

THX jsw,

i removed thin wall feature and it works.

BUT i still consider this to be a bug, not a feature. What if i need thin walls and to print similar shapes like these?

Should be considered by the devs anyway 😉

RE: Slicer has problems to do letters on Z.

I think the forum was playing up.  When I first looked the 3mf post wasn't there either.  JSW's post was though with his attached files.  It was only later when I checked back after getting home that the 3mf had shown up.  It does weird things like this sometimes.
