Prusa Slicer vs Simplify 3D

Hi! Recently I found out about the seamless layer height modification feature in PrusaSlicer so I decided to try it out. I print ArtToys so I´m always looking for ways to get faster and better quality prints. Until now I´ve been using Simplify 3D and so far I´m happy with it.

So, the new feature works great! BUT now i have some other issues that did not happen with simplify. On one hand, bridging options are very limited; Simplify can calculate the shortest bridging distance while in Prusa Slicer I can only set one angle for EVERY bridge in the print. On the other hand, Prusa Slicer is having some issues with thin walls, at first i would get a gap in the print, then I managed to solve that but the surface of the thin wall is clearly different.

Do you know if there are any settings to solve this issues?

Is Prusa planning on improving this aspects of the slicer?

Thank you!

I don't know of any setting to get PrusaSlicer to automatically calculate the best bridging angle, but you can manually change sections of your print from the overall print angle setting using mesh modifiers:

  • Add a mesh modifier to your part.

  • Manipulate it to encompass the feature where you want a different bridging angle.
  • Select the context menu "Add Settings/Infill"

  • Choose "Bridging angle" from the list.

  • Enter the bridging angle you want.

  • (Optional) Rename the mesh modifier object to a name that will make sense to you in 3 years when you reference this layout to remember how you did this.

Once you have everything setup how you like, remember to save as a .3mf project so if you need to re-load and make some tweaks to your settings, you don't need to completely recreate all the settings changes.

On one hand, this is/can be a tedious process that an automatic algorythm would make faster and easier. On the other hand, you have absolute control where and how to change the bridging angle (or any of the other settings available to the mesh modifier).

@sembazuru

Thank you very much for your reply. Indeed that alternative works! It is really complicated and time consuming but will do the job right, I might be able to export the mesh I need instead of doing it in the slicer.

Do you have any solution for the gaps problem?

Cheers!

You're welcome. Unfortunately, I don't have a solution to your gaps problem. It isn't an issue that I've run into yet. Sorry.

EDIT: But I see that the gaps problem was solved on the other thread. Good on the community there! 😀

EDIT2: Oops. That was someone else's thin wall problem.

Thin features can be accommodated using XY-Compensation; but the technique isn't without other warts.  So it's trial and error.
