Prusa slicer still adding supports above last printed layer?
Hello everyone!
I'm having a strange issue, which maybe you could help me with.
The question is - which setting in Prusa Slicer could be forcing a creation of a support structure above thin geometry (where there is nothing to support)?
I've simplified the model to the cone-like structures angled above hemisphere, and regardless of chosen support angle, I'm getting those strange supports with interface layers being still printed above the model height for a few layers! 🙂 What are they for? The geometry is solid, manifold, no errors, nothing to go wrong. Yet Prusa Slicer probably thinks there is something to support around the "spikes". Cura creates the supports without this error (in case of depicted 45 deg. it correctly creates none).
I like this slicer very much (perfect companion for my original Mini) and I would like to understand the issue, instead of just tedious blocking the supports in the areas they are not needed (yet "supports: everywhere" is absolutely necessary in my case, the model you see is just simplified illustration.

Supports are one of PS's weaknesses. Super aggressive. I understand the developers are working on improvements for future versions. I am not aware of any way to avoid it, short of, as you also indicated, using support blockers or enablers.

This is just a result of the poor support generation in Slicer. Luckily for you the next release seems to be hitting support related issues. In the mean time until that is available try the following.
Instead of using supports everywhere and then blockers, try using for support enforcers only and then use the paint on supports feature with the autoset by angle option (or just manually paint the areas if theres a limited area). You can then remove the painted on enforcer area in those areas where you dont want supports using the shift key.
Cant remember the last time I used a blocker. Its usually much much easier to use enforcers.

Thanks! I knew there was this option introduced, but for some reason I kept using 2.2. which doesn't have it 🙂
Autoset plus removing redundant supports looks like a good workaround, for the time being.

I'm using paint / enforce method described above. Unfortunately, Prusa slicer still places strange support structures above relevant layers - with no apparent reason. Yet, the paint / enforce is still the best way to start, for me.

I'd be asking why the support generator is placing supports on the tips of those spikes. They don't need support.
ps: I'd expect the model has something odd about it. But I've seen other examples of wayward support structure in models that seem to have no errors (as far as common error checks can find). So blaming the Slicer is probably the right thing to do.

No its just how bad PS is with supports at the moment. It does this quite often. I've checked out several models where this has happened and they are fine, even down to checking verts in Blender in edit mode looking for problems.
I also wouldn't bother opening an issue on github at this point. Given that the specific issue of supports being placed erroneously on top has already been reported several times there AND coupled with the fact that PS2.4 when released is supposed to be addressing support related issues I would personally wait. Once 2.4 alpha or beta is out I'd then load up your 3mf and check if it still does it. That way you can see if its already fixed and if not it proves to the devs that they still have a ways to go.
