modify a model

Hi I am new to 3D printing but I have successfully printed some models. I have a model of a net pot and I would like to modify it.  I would like to make the bottom half larger in diameter while keeping the top the same diameter.  Is this possible and if so how do I do it.

RE: modify a model

You would use some CAD software to modify the model.  How to do that depends on what format the original model is available in.  If all you have is the final mesh this could be easy to almost impossible (depending on the complexity of the model and your skill level).  If you have the original format and also have the software used to create it then it is usually much easier to modify.

Often its actually easier to recreate a model in CAD than to alter an existing one.  Again that depends on the complexity.

As for CAD software, ask 10 people and you will get 10 answers.  Everyone has their own favorites.  It also largely depends on the type of model you will be working with.  Functional, sculptural etc all lend themselves to different approaches.  That's not to say you can do any of the types in different software packages, just that the right package can make things easier.

Try posting the model you want altering (remembering to zip it into an archive so the forum will accept it).  Describe the changes needed and people can give a more informed opinion.  Also maybe some kind soul will do the work for you if they feel like it.

Thanks for your very full reply.  I will have a look at changing the design in CAD.
