Managing Printers, Nozzle, and Speed

Hi!  I'm taking the dive and trying to make PrusaSlicer my main slicer.  What I feel like I'm having a tough time with is where I should be putting my speed information.  For instance, if I take my Ender 3 and put a .8 nozzle on it, I know I need to drop my speed to 30mm/s.  Does that meed I need to have multiple print settings for .8 nozzles and .4 nozzles, as well as multiple printer settings?

It seems the logical approach would be to have a speed override in the Printer settings where I'm defining the nozzle.

Any advice for a newbie is much appreciated!

Thanks for the replies!  It feels like Prusa Slicer could really benefit from folders for organizing the myriad of profiles I'm about to create.  I have 3 different printers, so that creates a lot of potential print settings / filament settings since each of these have variables that are tied into the printer & print nozzle.

I've only got 2 printers, but I'm finding PrusaSlicer easier to stay organized with. One thing that helps reduce clutter is using the printer_model setting in my printer definitions. This isn't documented and you have to hand-edit the printer config (.ini) file initially, but if I specify a model in my printer settings (e.g. MK3 for my Prusa, SWX1 for my Sidewinder X1 -- This setting in empty in a new profile), then I can use dependencies in my print and filament settings profiles (e.g. printer_model=~/SWX1/ and nozzle_diameter[0]>=.20). This cuts down on the long list of profiles to select and reduces the visible options to only those suitable for the selected printer hardware (printer model & mounted nozzle in this example).

RE: Managing Printers, Nozzle, and Speed

I have set a max volumetric on my filament.

I go with about 11.5mm3 for PLA on my Delta (Flsun QQ-s) in the filament-tab.

For ABS/ASA i have 13mm3 as they can tolerate much higher temp without stringing badly (atleast on my machine).

I have one filament-setting for 0.4nozzle with what works good.

Then one for the 0.6nozzle, i have about 5c more temp in this one.

Then i can vary the speed and line-width with different printer-profiles.

I have for ex base: 80mm/s, 3wall, 15% infill for both my 0.4 and 0.6 nozzle.

Then i vary the line-width, saving one for each profile. For 0.4nozzle i have: Default, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7 line width.

For 0.6nozzle i have: Default, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0 line width.

I have run some calibrations as for speeds, temps and volumetrics for my printer.
Your milage might vary.

RE: Managing Printers, Nozzle, and Speed

Its best to have different Print profiles for different nozzle widths anyway, as leaving things like extrusion widths to the defaults can result in sub optimal results.  If you are doing that then it makes sense to have the speeds also set.  Its how the default Prusa ones are done too, there are different ones depending on the nozzle size.

As mentioned the Max Volumetric acts as a speed cap that limits the top speed of all extrusion types but that doesn't help with proportionally acting on speeds between the types of extrusion.  It can be set in either the filament profiles (which it is on the prusa filament profiles) or can also be configured in the print profiles (where it isn't by default).  PS will use the lower of either value.  Its a good setting for controlling between PLA and PETG for example but I don't think its a lot of help with different nozzle sizes.

Maybe I should just thin the herd and stick to one printer....

YOU JUST CHANGED MY LIFE

I hadn't really explored the "Profile Dependencies" tab.  That really clears everything up and makes using Prusa Slicer so much easier.

Do you know where the settings folder is?  And can it be sync'd between multiple computers with something like Resilio without a bunch of errors?

Thanks so much!

It's a little funky, but I find it works well. Glad it's useful.

I'm on MacOS, so it's under the Application Support folder. I know a similar structure exists for Windows, but I can't tell you where. I have read of people synchronizing the folder to a network drive, but haven't done that myself.

Here's a relevant discussion on reddit. I know you can use --datadir to point to a network share.

Also have a look here https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/prusaslicer/portable-install/

I installed it to a network share i have in my network.

Should also work on a usb for portability.

The Prusaslicer dir stores stuff under: c:\Users\[USER]\appdata\Roaming\PrusaSlicer\

On my windows 10 atleast.
