Installing PrusaSlicer 2.3.0-RC1 on Macbook Pro

I just downloaded from GitHub and installed PrusaSlicer 2.3.0-RC1. I'm wondering why the dmg file doesn't install by allowing the user to drag and drop the dmg file into the Applications folder? That is the standard behavior though I admit I'm somewhat new to MacOS so I could be wrong. I found this site https://www.howtogeek.com/177619/how-to-install-applications-on-a-mac-everything-you-need-to-know/ which describes how dmg files are usually handled. PrusaSlicer is installed into a sub-folder of Applications named Original Prusa Drivers. I don't necessarily see a problem with that but for newbies, it is a bit unexpected. When I downloaded the dmg file I put it in a network folder and opened it from there. I could see PrusaSlicer in the Locations section of Finder. I then had to open it again from the Locations folder that popped up. While PrusaSlicer was running I couldn't unmount it which makes sense. Thinking that maybe it was a mistake to install from a network folder, I copied the dmg file to the Downloads folder on the Macbook Pro. However, that's made no difference. To launch the application, I have to do the "double open" if I eject the PrusaSlicer mount. I believe what I want is the application files all installed on the local HDD so another has to be mounted. I'm not sure how to accomplish that.

Should I have uninstalled the existing instance of PrusaSlicer before installing the new version?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sounds to me as if you are dragging the DMG file in to your Applications folder. You only need to drag the application contained within the DMG file in to your applications folder.

Hope you get it sorted.

  1. Click on the DMG file to open it. You will open a folder looking thing with the application in it at that time.
  2. Drag the application to the application folder.
  3. Open the application.
  4. You can trash the DMG file now.

When I open the dmg file it doesn’t show a folder and the icon for PruserSlicer as I  expected. That’s why I’m perplexed. As originally explained, if I click on the dmg file a folder is displayed with only the PruserSlicer icon in it. If I click on that icon, PruserSlicer opens but I can’t eject the PruserSlicer mount until I quit PruserSlicer.  Are no time do I get the option of dragging the PruserSlicer icon into the Applications folder.

To further confirm that PrusaSlicer isn’t installing “correctly”, I installed another application and it worked exactly like I expected it to.

@dbaldon

When you open the folder after clicking on the DMG file, drag the PrusaSlicer icon to the Application folder. That is the app you want to run, from the Application folder. There’s no installer to run for the alpha/beta/RC build of the app.

@alex-hung I'll give that a try. I suspected that things might work a little differently since this is an RC and not a GA build.

Not at all. I’ve been using alpha 2, 3, 4, beta 1, 2, and RC 2. They all have no installer, just drag & drop.

@dbaldon

I suspect the GA version will be installer based and put the app in the usual folder.
