2.3 slicing uses multi CPU Core?

I'm looking to buy a new laptop, one of the things I need it to do well is slicing. So should I get a faster multi core machine or one with the faster single core performance? (so depends if Prusaslicer uses multiple cores for slicing?) I've ran task manager while slicing and it kinda looks like it uses multiple cores but I thought I read it is only single core??

You haven't been able to buy a single core laptop in a loooooooong time.

I recently purchased a laptop with an 11th Gen i5 and it goes great. Specifically,  it's a 15" Dell G3 with 8GB RAM, dedicated NVidia  graphics card, 500GB NVRAM main HDD and 1TB conventional HDD.

I use it for all my Fusion 360 modelling, slicing my designs and for OBS to do live streams to YouTube, etc.

@morphias. It is true you have to search very hard to find a single core processor nowadays, but some processors are better for single core tasks and other processors favor multi core tasks. So the choice of processor is important and depends on the tasks you want to perform.

The last spike in all processor windows is when slicing was started

@yveske

Here is my Core i5 slicing a design in PS 2.3. As you can see, PS multi-threads beautifully.

Mine does not multithread, do you maybe have any idea why?

I have assigned all core/thread in task manager, also reinstalled PS.

Downloaded your file (Kamera1-projekt-2.zip) from the other thread and my CPU behaves the same for that file.
I guess there are just too much dependencies, so the slicer can't split off models or features to another core.
Try filling your bed with completely separate models from thingiverse and you will see all cores being used.

I don't think this is number of model parts or anything model related.  There are a couple of threads here about some computers only using single cores for slicing.  There's also a thread on the Susie github about it.

Normally even slicing something as simple as a calibration cube results in multiple cores doing the slicing work.  I only have a 6 core i5 machine but it uses all of them.  Other users can show that all 12-16 cores they have are all working on slicing too.

Unfortunately there seem to be some instances of machines only using 1 core to slice.  So far I have seen reports of single core use on both AMD and Intel chipsets, Windows 10 and Windows 7 machines.  There's not enough data to even begin to work out the cause though.

I also don't think anyone who is having the issue has reported it on the Prusa Slicer github as yet.  Until that happens there is no chance of Prusa devs even looking into it.

I suspect, without any evidence whatsoever, that the number os STL's was an issue in how long it took to slice.

I suggested to m1quel that he try slicing one of Prusa's samples or that he try slicing he's problem file with another slicer.

I have a core i9 and PrusaSlicer does not strain it in the slightest.   I can’t say the same for Fusion 360.

Thanks for the advices, i did as @towlerg said, i downloaded the "prusa sample sheep" made it big in the slicer to get some workload.

The cpu used all 16 treads available until a specific time and then jumped over to one core?!?

It uses all threads until it's getting to the "end" and that's where the time starts to tick, i really don't understand this issue, it's above my paygrade.

I wonder if its the stage where it changes from slicing to working out the visualisation of the preview.  It does tend to pause at that point on my system too.

I tried one other thing, a 3 body model with a 4 color changes.

It's a flat model with a logo 2 different logos, unfortunately i can't share these specific files.

The cpu uses all threads in a short peak as you se in the first picture, then it ones uses one for the rest of the slice, it takes 10minutes to slice the file.

@m1quel

Did you try another slicer, hopfully get some perspective?

I have i9 on a Mac Book Pro.  No issues here.

@towlerg

I haven't, never had any issues before, it all started with PS 2.3.0

I really do prefer to only use one slicer. Been using PS as long as i had prusa printers.

Perhaps you could revert to 2.2 and see what happen with the problematic file.If that solves the problem, raise an issue on github.

Hello all.

Same issue explain here : https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/6295

And the anwser is : Duplicate of #2263. G-Code export parallelization is on our todo list.

And no date for this feature. I don't understand ... in 2021 ... no multithreading gcode generate. Wait and see. May be one day 🙂

Go back to PS 2.2 or idea because is not possible to wait 1h minimum for generate a simple gcode 🙁
