2.3.0 strange slicing in vase mode

Hi Folks,

I'm attempting some vase mode Siepinski pyramid prints from the scad at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2613568

When sliced, this object ends up with missing chunks of some layers ( see attached image and project) weird slicing of this complicated object in vase mode missing_sections

If I scale up to at least 117% then all is good and the slice works as intended, any idea what's going on here?

Cheers,

        Robin.

Hi Zed,

when you add the file to slicer, do you get a triangle like the one circled in the Image Below?

if you do, the STL has Errors,
Click on the Triangle and the slicer should fix the file  using netfabb...

which may help,

regards Joan

Hi Joan,

nope, STL shows no errors I'm afraid.

cheers,

Which of the 8 files did you try?

Thanks for you help Joan,

I brewed my own stl by running the opendscad source from that thingiverse object.  here's an  STL  and the source zipped up (sorry, I thought it got included in the project file I attached)

sierpinski_vase sierpinski_vase

I just had a crash (probably due to all the hefty recursive geometry processing I've been up to! ) and lost my scad paramter edits so the attached isn't the exact same as I was trying to print, but exhibits the same behavior, in fact it's even worse, you need to scale it to 150% to get anything sensible out of vase mode.

cheers,

      Robin.

There are 529 thin faces on that model.  Basically there are many verts that are folded over and not merged with the adjacent ones that they should be.  Once again a stellar example of bad Openscad model generation/exporting.  Most of the models we see that don't slice correctly come from Openscad.  However in this case I dont think that is the issue.

I think at the size the original model is at 14x14mm by under 10mm high that its the wall thickness that is the problem.  If I reduce the extrusion width down to 0.25 then it prints in vase mode at the size you have it.  Scaling it up is the equivalent of using a smaller nozzle as a ratio.

Printing it not in vase mode also works as that allows PS to do stuff with adjacent perimeters I think.
