FEP Lifespan

Just made an order for the SL1 Kit, looking forward to it!

I’m wondering what the specifications are for the replacement FEP film on the resin tank and the lifespan I could hope to get out of a sheet.

The SL1 webpage says it will be available on the estore but I don’t see it up yet. I’d like to source it more locally before the printer arrives so I’m prepared.

I got a spare with the Beta printer, so I expect you will get a spare too...

I have not used the spare yet. the original is still going strong after a lot of prints...

Awesome news, this feature was a big draw that helped sell me on this printer.

It is working for me, but I already have a mk3 and SL1.  Was the live chat able to help?  Also, the SL1 pre-assembled came with extra FEP.  There were 2 extras plus the pre-installed one.  I do not know how many the kit will have.  I have not had to replace the FEP yet on my SL1.

Doesn't make any sense, but then again they may have their reasons as to why they are walling it off for now. Maybe if they see you on pre-order they would make exceptions? Make an attempt to contact them about it and see what answers.

always best to chat with Customer Services.

🙂

on another matter... I believe the replacement Prusa FEP sheets are laser cut and are very easy to replace, If I recall correctly the comment was that the sheets aligned exactly with the screw holes and tightened down perfectly! (Guess I will find out for myself  when it's time to change!

Hello, I also can't see that page ( https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/sl1/955-fep-film.html ) , have emailed support.

Anyone that can see this page, could they tell me the price? I'm estimating the running cost of the SL1

Also, to answer the original question: "The warranty of the FEP foil covers 10 cycles (print jobs). When used properly in accordance with the instructions in the official guides (such as this handbook), the life expectancy of the FEP foil is several times longer." - https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/3d-printers/722-original-prusa-sl1-kit-curing-and-washing-machine.html

RE: FEP Lifespan

In general, stress is a main enemy of FEP and thanks to FEP’s low elastic modulus (15-20 MPa), high elongation at break (200-300%) and small differences in thermal expansion coefficient between the polymer and glass, it has an excellent flex life. FEP film with a thickness of 0.15mm has a service life of about 1.2 million flexes under conditions that are not severe enough to cause the film to fail in any other way, such as breaking or delaminating. According to the Flex Life Test Standard UL 746C, FEP films with thicknesses ranging from 0.04-0.15mm are tested with a quantity of 36.6 x 10 mm, rotating at 2RPM with an applied load of 1000N for 1000 continuous hours. The UL 746C test is most often used to compare FEP formulations by the same manufacturer under the same test conditions.

RE:

I'll be brandnew to resin printing in a while, admittedly not with an SL1S, but my question is of general question anyway. I get it that FEP films need to be treated with care to avoid microscratching over time. What are you using to wipe your resin vat clean? I have seen multiple suggestions on youtube and I am not sure yet what to use.

My idea would be to use a silicon spatula for moving the majority of the resin off the vat, then spray some IPA on it and lastly wipe it with an ipa soaked towel/tissue softly clean. Is that how you do it, if so, what kind of towel/tissue are you using.

I would order those (oneway) UVEX lens cleaning tissues, they come in reasonably sized boxes, contain no nonsense (parfum, or any wet stuff to begin with) and are per sheet fairly affordable. The only problem is that they are very hard to get, only found a very doubious badly reviewed amazon marketplace store and RS (serious, acceptably priced but with a 11 EUR shipping fee attached).

RE:

Lifespan of wear & tear parts seems to decrease exponentially in relation to the depletion of spare parts stock readily available at hand. The lower the number of spare parts, the shorter the lifespan of the in-use part.

I try to give answers to the best of my ability, but I am not a 3D printing pro by any means, and anything you do you do at your own risk. BTW: I have no food for…

RE: FEP Lifespan

I purchased Nigrin microfiber polishing towels now in the end (50 pcs for 5 EUR). Let's see if that works out.
