MMU2 print settings

i'm curious why the MMU2 does not support 0.1mm or lower layer heights in the default print settings, if i switch profiles to the Original Pursa i3 MK3S, i get 0.1, 0.07 and 0.05 as an option.

once the filament is fed to the extruder, the MMU2 has no further interaction until the remove is sent to it so does not impede the print, so why are these settings not available by default for the MMU2

Just curious, but it seems that its a bit wierd that they should not be there

Any reason?

TIA

GB.

RE: MMU2 print settings

I don't know of an official reason, but some items I can think of:

  • Lower layer heights greatly increase the size of your wipe tower. As I recall from when I played with it the purge tower for a 0.05 print was roughly 10x that of the same model at 0.2mm. The extra wiping also adds significantly more time too.
  • Lower layer heights are more prone to jamming and the MMU already has a bad reputation for tool change issues.

That said, lower heights do work. You just have to build the profile which it turns out is not difficult. You can find my 0.05mm profile here and all I did was copy the non-MMU profile and remove the comments (forgot the exact syntax) that restricted it from working with the MMU.

I've meant to go back and add the rest of the missing profiles as well as make sure that one is up to date for the latest PS version, but I have a terrible habit of starting projects and never seeing them through 🙄

Can confirm, I've done 0.10 and 0.15mm prints without issue.

... Can also confirm that last statement 😛

RE: MMU2 print settings

thanks guys, just thought i was going a bit mad - the settings are also there on the MMU2 single profile.  i never really switch out of the mmu2 one, and if im thinking of printing single colour - i never change it and print at 0.15

ill create a new setting and have a play at higher resolutions 🙂

Thanks all

Yeah sorry about that. I feel bad every time I look at the printer (which is often since it's in my office by the door...). I just got frustrated with the state of tools to turn single objects into MMU prints and got even more disappointed by what BigBrain3D released.

I did design a massive MMU print (the main part was a 100 hour print with 1204 tool changes and 0 failures!) and intended to get back to the bucket code. When I went to test the BB3D bucket, however, it failed and I decided to not get mired down at that time. Now it turns out I had some design issues with that print project and I need to redo some stuff, but haven't gotten back to it 🙄

I know how it is. Couldn't resist a tongue-in-cheek needle though...

Well, the good news is the bucket code will likely see a second life as I'm in the middle of adapting it for the BB3D mechanism now that I have a skelestruder variant of it. But I'm guilty of the same w/r/t actually integrating the bucket support into Plicer. 🙂

Urgency has also decreased somewhat with the impending 2.2 release that features reduced wipe tower plastic, but of course lower layer heights are still stuck with the loss of bed area when the footprint gets massive.
