trouble with spool join

hi folks

I have problems printing an object that requires the replacement of a spool. More precisely :
1. when i try to use the feature "spool join", the printer cannot remove old filament (old filament stays between mmu2 and the extruder)
2. when i dont use the feature "spool join", the printer beeps asking me to remove old filament (but HOW ??? the filament is blocked in the extruder) and to press knob to load new filament (if if press the knob without removing old filament, it's a nightmare, indeed)

so... some questions
1. in case using "spool join", how printer should proceed to remove old filament ? where the filament should come from ?
2. in cas not using "spool join", how should i proceed to remove old filament ? why is the filament blocked in the extruder ?

thank you for your support !

RE: trouble with spool join

That does sound like it's not working properly. I haven't used SpoolJoin yet myself, but from my experience with non-join mode, if it runs out of filament, it should retract the remaining filament to the MMU2 and do an "eject" so you can load the next spool in the same MMU2 slot — not leave it at the extruder.

If you try a multimaterial print, does it successfully do automatic filament changes?

RE: trouble with spool join

Spool join should work, if the filament is ejected from the extruder and doesn't unload, this means that the issue comes certainly from the MMU unit, check all the gears (alignment, tightening) the idler (not loose, not broken), check also the filament pass trough the selector and the FINDA adjustment.

With spool join on, when your spool is at the end, the filament is unloaded and the next spool is selected for loading, you cannot choose the one you want, it's 1 to 2, 2 to 3 etc...

I used spool join several times and it worked fine every time.

RE: trouble with spool join

thank you for your answers !

everything is ok with multimaterial printing, i made a lot of successful tests with dribbling version of prusaslicer 🙂

if i understand well, in non join mode, when the end of filament is detected by finda (and it is in my tests) :

1. the old filament goes back from the extruder to the mmu

2. the old filament is ejected from the mmu (as it will be by pressing "eject filament" from the control panel)

3. new filament is loaded

right ?

in this case, my trouble comes from problem in stage (1). i will check that point

thank you all !

Everything works fine now ! the idler was not tight enough and the filament was not pushed back from the extruder to the mmu
