New firmware and updated parts

So I have a new MK3S that I am just starting to play with. I ordered the MMU2S with it. I was unaware of all the problems. I haven't added the MMU2S upgrade yet but after reading the horror stories I'm wondering if I should. Today I come across this https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/releases

and am dumbfounded that I have a new in box MMU2S that I bought with features that were advertised but not enabled. Specifically the blade to trim the end of the filament. I'm horrified that It's still in the box and I'm going to be needing to print my own parts to make the blade not fall out of the holder. The MK3S works beautifully but WTF is up with the Mmu2S and Prusa thinking they can expect us to pay for stuff that won't work that we have to solve the problems on and supply our own parts for?

Really. That’s your response. You’re thinking I haven’t called the dealer yet? You have an attitude problem. My initial response would be significantly less polite. What would possess you to come up with an inappropriate response like that.? The internet is flooded with problems on these and a dozen part upgrades to try and make them marginally useful.

Prusa advertises an integrated filament cutter to trim ends if needed.  Which it would seem it does need. It has not been enabled till this beta. So it’s ok to advertise and sell things not as advertised? As far as I know that’s actually a crime.

This is a user-user support forum. Your post was mostly about being horrified and offended, but listed nothing anybody here can help with. If you are having specific problems, describe them and plenty of people will be glad to help. Otherwise, this is mostly where unpaid volunteers help people out. Complaints should be directed to Prusa support.

@bobstro

Funny I said I wondered if I should put it on. Constructive responses would have been welcome. What  useless forum. Thanks for nothing. I'm done here.

RE: New firmware and updated parts

Hi rayrees,

when I received my MMU2S I was in the same situation. My initial reaction was that since the printer worked beautifully, I would not mess everything.

I had bought the MK3S assembled by Prusa since I wanted to 3D print, tired from the experience with a previous printer (different brand) , that had intermittent hardware issues on the motherboard, and that wasted me two years.

But I wanted to be able to do multiple colour prints. So I decided to start building the MMU2S kit and work with it. I spend lot of time in resolving the design flaws, but at the end I got a working MMU2. I am happy with it. I think that there is nothing better than the MMU2.
Every other solution on the market has also drawbacks and issues than, in my opinion, make the MMU2, flexible and competitive. And while the other are "closed source" and proprietary, here you have the whole community working on improving it.

At the beginning the MMU2 was a new world all to discover. You are in a better situation than me one year ago, since you have now lots of feedbacks from people using the MMU2s that spent months to understand and fix all the issues.

Basically I could say:

  • Even if it seems a simple kit, is not. You should have some manual skills to mount things. Even I, struggle to align a supposed very simple part to build. Precision is a key. As usual a misaligned gear, or bar, or everything, could lead to a defective device. If you feel comfortable with this, go ahead.
  • Almost all the MMU2S issues have been clarified and I would say "solved" in this forum. There are few keys in short:
     - Replace the original PTFE tubes with equivalent in larger diameter (search on the forum for details)
    -  Replace the PRUSA heatbreak with an ORIGINAL E3D heatbreak (it has not a bottleneck that create issues -search on the forum for details)
    -  Remove the blade. As it is, it is of very few help and functionality, and often moves and blocks the axe.
    -  If you can, reprint an updated pieces from thingiverse (the one that contains the FINDA and blade) that improve the reliability.
    -  Update the MMU2 firmware. I seems it has solved the "phantom filament" issue.
    -  Use a SPECIFIC version of PRUSASLICER: they have been developed by the community to address some issues on which Prusa did not work, to allow a perfect shape of the filament before unloading, to avoid jam into the printer and MMU2. One is code named "SkinnyDip" and the other is codenamed "Dribbling". I developed this last just to solve all the issues I had on the MMU2S. You can find details on the forum about the two version on specific topics. They are available on github.

And as always, you should have a good amount of PATIENCE and determination to reach your goals. There are a lot of people owning a MMU2S working even better than mine, that have done hundreds of filament changes without any issue. That is the results of a wise tuning of mechanical tolerance, and PrusaSlicer with perfect filament parameters.

Best Regards
