RE: MMU2S not ready for public use

@eric-b52:

Sorry our two last posts crossed.

I totally agree with you, the way the MMUx was advertised is totally wrong.

If you release a product as a research/student project, just fine!

I think PR has made a huge mistake in terms of their marketing approach.

Well, once more you are witnessing the big challenge of combining "open source" and the commercial way of making some

reasonable profit in order to pay your motivated and dedicated employees.

It would be nice if the mods or admins (if there are any) were active and helping us solve these problems.  But, so far, they are nowhere to be found while we experience nothing but failures with this thing.

This, I think, has more to do with this crappy site update than with people not helping. Prior to the Wordpress abomination that has been thrust upon us the site was a lot more active and had some very knowledgeable and helpful members and mods. While I do still see them occasionally, they are far less active here than they used to be. PJR and Nikolai(?) are both mods and both chime in when they have something to add.

I spent a month answering or theorizing on everything that came up while I was going through the same pain. I've slacked off on helping mainly because it's a lot of the same issues and clearly people are not searching (even in the same thread they post in!) for already available ideas. I want to help people, but it gets taxing when I have a job, kids, and I'd like to spend time actually printing 😉

No, I'm not. I'm just a regular user 😀.

Agree on your comment. After the update it kind of lost the family feeling and instead it's more like facebook group. I'm still trying to check here and there but less frequent after the update.

The whole layout has too much white space and a lot of space is just wasted. The actual content is less visual and present. I hope the developers are working on improvements to the forum as it was always a good place to get good quality hints.

... and because of the 5 min edit limit, I have to post this addition instead of just editing my post. Just prove of my sentence above.

just tried what I think should be a simple 2 color print.   Guess what?   FAILURE...EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Attachment removed

this looks like a simple layer shift and not an MMU specific problem, could be the wrong firmware on the printer leading to an overextruded wipe tower which catches the nozzle and causes layer shifts.

It would be nice if the mods or admins (if there are any) were active and helping us solve these problems.  But, so far, they are nowhere to be found while we experience nothing but failures with this thing.

Quick explanation:

Moderators are not staff members of PR and we do have other things to do.

Admins are members of PR staff but it is mainly Jakub who posts on these forums, mainly regarding news.

Since the introduction of this new forum, I have spent most of my available time moderating.  And working out how to do what I need to do.  And reporting forum faults.

Yes, I have an MMU2, but currently it's not working - and I don't have the time to troubleshoot it 🙁

Joan would be posting here regularly, but she also has other things to do (including beta-testing the SL1)

I can't think of any other moderators with the MMU2.

Please understand that we would love to have the time to help with your problems, but that time is simply not available right now.

You forgot about me? 😥

As for helping with these issues, most of what's been asked has been answered quite nicely by others. Anything that I were to post on these would just be a repeat of what others have said. If I have something different to add I most certainly will.

one of the users on facebook posted this:  https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3217915?fbclid=IwAR3UKzNRYGo3nUd1W__rb-ushrUGM3EE-KmEigsltyAsFdENY5hjIYuwkRs

I looked at those images inside this download and tweaked them in prusaslicer to give it a go last night.  2 color print.  Well, I'm happy to say there is progress.  The print still failed, but it got further than its ever gotten. I had to unload and snip off the end of each filament once or twice, but it recovered nicely and kept going.   I had it set to print the center gear white, the outer gears gray and the main ring white.  Well, it started doing it that way just fine, but after a few layers, it started printing everything white.  When it got to the end (well, when I aborted the print) it was actually trying to print gray.   Not sure why the color problem.  But, I ended up having to abort the print because filament got jammed in the mmu and I couldn't move the selector to clear it without powering the machine down.  So, user intervention got me to 75% complete (even though wrong colors) before failure.     It's definite progress in spite of the wrong colors.

Well, after several weeks of tinkering with this thing, while I'm getting STELLAR results withe my MK3 and Palette 2 pro, I finally have a successful print.  First one took quite a bit of intervention to get it finished but it finished.   2nd print did as well with less intervention.  I'm still yet to get a complete project printed without have to do something to keep it running but I'm making progress.

I finally see its actually possible to get quality prints from this thing but need to tweak a little more before i'm ready to trust it to to a long print on its own.

RE: MMU2S not ready for public use

All,

Can't we all just get along?  I will agree that the MMU2S is a kewl idea and that it's not nirvana, (seems more like 'nerve on ya').  My question is what do you expect for go around 2.5?  Rubber biscuits?

Please keep this constructive, as I am getting a head ache after a whole night of no sleep, (not because of the MMU2S), and reading through all of the failures.  I am looking for proven fixes to the issues.  This is OPEN SOURCE is it not?

Let me build the enclosure and put it together with some GOOD WORKING ideas.  I have seen a whole lot of great ideas and am already trying to incorporate them as I produce parts using the MK3S.  This banter gives me a headache.

Moderators thank you for your support.  I have read your comments form several recent threads and despite the less than adequate forum I am able to get a lot of information out of this.  Now to get PR to understand that when I post I would rather get a decent link to the latest comments then over 25 links telling me that 3 people have replied to a post that I am following.  Just fodder for my move to trash rules.

Thanks in advance,

Robin

RE: MMU2S not ready for public use

To be fair i agree be nice. But also i agree theres aloud to a prove on the MMU2S.

1. Stepper moters on the MMU2S are getting to hot after 5 hours print.
2. 5 PTFE Tube conectors on the back for maintenance so you can easily disconnect the MMu2S.
3. When changing filament skip first one lane so the raiser can snip of essex filament.
4. Extruder Hotend needs to be aproved because of clicing filament. And ya i use only Prusament.

Because i am now more than a week playing with the MMU2S and lost 2 rolls of Filament becuase of or feading problems or clicing ectruder on my hotend. And for those out there i now what i am doing. I have all the prusa printers. But its my first time posting because of these issues. And if you wanna print multicolor wait befor you by. When i am reading the mmu2s section only problems what i read here.

So i hope that prusa is gonna look in the redesign of the extruder for the MK3S MMU2S. FOr now i am gonna switch over to my bondtech xtruder to see if i then finaly can print a succesvol 2 color benchy.

What you just wrote is PERFECT.  Like pain reliever to my headache.  I am also looking to OTHERS that have specific design changes.  As a community we can also get JP to think differently to improve his products.  It is hard to find messages like yours that are thoughtful among all the simple bashing.

That was my point.

Bashing became more popular as some people are just giving up on their units. They are not searching for help but just venting their anger. So far I've seen only couple those threads here  and it's still by far not a majority.

Actually there are already tons of improvements in regards to the MMU2. Just browse through the old threads in the MMU2 section. You will find many jewels there. You can also easily unsubscribe to this thread and avoid similar threads. There are still people helping on the MMU2 configuration and there are still old and new members searching for help.

On page 1 of this thread is a post with some VERY good information in it.  Vital info to help you print more easily.

EDIT:  Also, look here on Thingiverse, I have started collecting all the items I am using with my MMU2s

RE: MMU2S not ready for public use

The MMU is such a big disappointment, some of us want to actually print models and not to spend the time attempting to make the printer work as it should. This product made us take a perfect MK3 ( that I loved btw)  and make it an engineering project.

Prusa should keep it in mind ( and I hope they do read this) and find a way to make good either by supplying the proper fix or by recalling this product. in any case this should not have been sold without a big warning sign.

Maybe if you describe what made you giving up in more detail, PR could take it as an input for future revisions.

RE: MMU2S not ready for public use

Hi,

Maybe I can help in a positive way to address some of the frustrations of disappointed MMU(2s) users.

Here is my history with PR:

Disclaimer:

I use my Prûsa solely for testing my 3D design skills to see if its feasible to 3D manufacture my ideas. In fact I am using my Prûsa printer for what it is to MHO: A research printer, NO MORE and certainly NO LESS.

1) First I bought a Prûsa I3/MK3 kit, assembled it and gave it a try.

Result: Whow,  quit an amazing piece of engineering. Sure, I met the usually problems which is part of the deal getting a new tool up and running.

2) Then I saw the possibility of adding a MMU unit to it. Multi-color printing for less then +/- $/€ 2.000,-

First thought: "This is too good to be true, be prepared..." When something sounds too good to be true, it usually isn't...

Result: My feeling was right.

Ok, what's next?

Now you see what's happening if you do not manage expectations well (PR: this is a very positive ment feedback!!)

On the other side if you, customer, expected a full blown multi-color 3D printing option for this price level.... well...:)

Conclusion:

As I mentioned sometime ago on this forum you have, as a customer, only two options:

A) Accept that you bought, with the MMU(2s), a research project and have to spend a lot of time and contribute to this forum.

B) You are totally disappointed and angry: Well, look into the mirror...:) There is the fool who expected for less then €2000, - a solution worth more than € 200-400K

C) Is PR to blame? Sure, don't advertise a product the way you did with the MMU(2s). A lost customer due to frustrations is almost impossible to win back.....

Nevertheless:  Keep on researching and make something useful!!

Regarding high expectations I've read already for MK2/MK3 printer same thing. I think this is a general problem Prusa is fighting. PR is victim of their own success.

Do you have anything from engineering perspective which need to be improved?

For example for me two biggest topics for improvement are:

  • Filament buffer: Still too flimsy with a lot of tubes and holders
  • Extruder head/IR sensor mount: No space for any errors. Either it's calibrated perfectly and works perfectly or something is off and you're getting a lot of different issues because of that

RE: MMU2S not ready for public use

Hi Nicolai-R,

Yes, I have!

1) Forget all of the enclosures, filament buffers etc.

2) Print the MK3s upgrade parts yourself. In my case 0.1 mm tolerance printed with Polycarbonate. (avoiding temperature issues)

3) Sand and or polish all your parts where the filament encounters the typical 3D layers... The factory produced parts are simply not good enough.

3) Test, test and test over and over your filament path to reduce friction! All tests to be performed with the MMU2s in single mode!!

4) Repeat this until you are totally satisfied like, in my case, I see the I3/MK3s w. MMU2s in SINGLE MODE performing like my I3/MK3 before. upgrade !!

5) Then and NO earlier start very slowly dreaming about a multi-color sheep:):)

PS: The upgrade form the MK3 to the MK3s is  a huge improvement in terms of print quality!!
