RE: Which Raspberry is needed on a MK3S for octoprint and camera ?

As long as you can avoid using swap space, less is good. However, if there is a chance running apps need to swap to find memory, the extra 2GB is cheap insurance. I looked at it this way: I am going to have a monitor by my printer, I waste time waiting for a print to start, so while I am there, and I have a computer connection, why not make it a useful computer? So I loaded up an OS that does things other than a dedicated OctoPrint kiosk. I can watch the news, I can surf the web for YouTube videos of printing ideas, or even play my favorite tunes on the tinny monitor speakers.

A Pi3 was $35, and the Pi4 $50; the 4G added $10. Half a spool of filament - easy decision.

Everything which is said here is right and even the 4GB version is not that expensice - but still: running OctoPrint on Raspberry Pi is not consuming very much memory. That is the situation on one of my Pi 3:

@clemens-m

What kind of a nice plugin is that? Is this a section of Octolapse?

Yes - it is called: Resource Monitor

Hey, i see there are guys that do not use a regular alimentation for the raspberry 4 but have a module to directly grab the alimentation from the prusa ?!  However the videos that shows it do not explain what of module it is and do not provide accurate steps information to repeat the operation.
Would you have any idea on how to do that ?

I have no idea what you are meaning - can you post a link to that video?

The idea is to use a converter 12v>5v to power the raspberry directly with the prusa, i found a first video here but it's really not explained correctly :

However, it seems the same process on this one and it's really much better explained :

Yes what you can see here is a step down converter which takes the supply of the prusa printer 12,0V and goes down to 5,0V (or 5,1V). It should be able to drive about 3A (most of them are only able to supply 2A). Be careful: you have to set correct voltage before you connect to the Pi !!!!!!!! And the other thing is, that the power supply of the Prusa is not having that much power reserve. Maybe a seperate power supply is the better choice.

@clemens-m

You're totally right !
I just asked my father which works in electronics and he tolds me the same, it can work to connect to Pi on the printer (with the correct voltage) but it's preferable to use a separate power supply because at the printer has maybe not much power and it's possible that the power delivered the Pi would not be that stable, which is obviously not recommanded at all, and so not worth.

Thanks for your help !

@clemens-m

OctoPrint board has numerous posts re. power (and the lack of it). IMHO the possible convenience of using a buck converter as opposed to a genuine Raspberry wall wart just isn't worth it. If you use a buck convertor make sure it's set for 5.1v UNDER LOAD.

@towlerg

Well i've just found in my samsung S8 box, a power supply with a usb-c connector !
It seems to be 5v, i think it should work on the raspberry as well.

Just forget my last post, an AC from smartphone deliver max 2A and the rasp 4 needs 3A, so i'm gonna stop the bullshit and get a decent ac for the Pi4.

I have been using these power supplies for the various Raspis for years and runs stable:

https://www.meanwell-web.com/en-gb/ac-dc-single-output-enclosed-power-supply-output-rs--25--5

The voltage is adjustable to 5.1V. Therefore I built a case and attached it to the printer frame.

Most people who have used a Pi4 and measured current draw under heavy use find a 1 amp supply works quite well. 3A is overkill for when every component is working at maximum draw: all four usb posts at full speed and device attached to them drawing 1.2 amps, HDMI at 4k, bluetooth humming, ethernet at 1Gbps, and Wifi maxed out in power and bit rate. A typical 1.2A to 2A USB source should work well enough.  The small $5 buck converters that are adjustable also work well set at 5.1v, and they are small enough to fit inside the spaces we have.

RE: Which Raspberry is needed on a MK3S for octoprint and camera ?

It just depends on what you want to do with it. I am on the safe side with the Meanwell and it doesn't cost much more than a 1.5A USB source. I have a Pi camera, 2 USB cameras, a 7" touchscreen, an USB dongle and several GPIO relays connected to the 3B+ and I can measure a current of more than 1.5A (Lab PS) with the 3B+ without putting too much stress on the CPU. So the power supply still offers reserves and does not get very warm.
The recommendations for choosing the dimension of the power supply I have taken here:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/power/README.md

But if you want to know more about it, you can use one of these or similar devices: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X3HST7V

Hey guys,

Thanks for your help on the power supply for my Pi4, everything's running fine now 🙂
Well i mean almost everything, i'm trying since yesterday to setup a camera from my smartphone, so an IP cam (via an app) and it doesn't work at all.
I've seen lot of video and i'm surprised that mostly everybody use either a raspberry camera or a webcam, but no one use a smartphone (even an old one) within Octoprint...

Do you have any idea how to do this ?
My goal would be to use an Old samsung S4 as camera, connected in octoprint so i can use octolapse with it without spending 50€ in camera. (and because it's part of the game to do this way)

I think it maight be possible with a script to tell octoprint to use the camera at a given IP adress (it doesn't work if i directly put the IP adress of the cam, that works in the brower btw)

Thanks !!

@hotwil

Take a look at the "IP Webcam" app. Maybe you can use it to realize your plans.

I've already check this app, which seems very great with a lot of options !
However, it seems to be in octoprint itself that i don't get my video stream, i must be mistaking somewhere but really, i don't konw how to tell to octoprint to take the video from the IP that i give to it.

So okay, i figured out how to get my stream in octoprint through Ip Webcam !
My mistake was in the end of the ip adress where i didn't put "/video" as well as the "http://" at the beginning.
More infos : https://www.reddit.com/r/octoprint/comments/hv0vrb/use_android_phone_as_ip_web_camera/

The next step is to get it in Octolapse, the snapshots seems to work (i only have a green notification saying it's okay, it's kinda ping), but i have no stream available.
After some researchs, i found a vide from the octolapse creator, that explain how to setup a DSLR camera in octolapse, with a script :

I'll check all of this tomorrow and will tell if it works 😉
