Use USB to monitor status while printing from SD card?

Is it possible to use Octoprint only to monitor the progress while printing from an SD card? I know that Octoprint has a way to upload to the SD card but I'm not clear on what it means for Octoprint to print from an SD card (does it just tell the printer a filename?)... I don't really trust Octoprint to drive the printer but I would love to be able to get metrics on how far along the print is (in addition to a camera). Alternately, does anyone know if I can issue commands to the printer over USB *while* it's printing from the SD card? e.g. could I query the current layer height?

Yes, it works fine. Just connect Octoprint and then print from the SD using the on-machine LCD. Octoprint will report progress.

Also there's no reason to skip having Octoprint do the driving of the print. It works great, I've used it since the day I got the MK3 and have no issues over hundreds of prints.

Great! I'll give it a try! Thanks.
