OctoPrint + Raspberry Pi Camera v2 + enclosure

Hello.
I almost finished my enclosure and already installed OctoPrint on RPi4.
Now I want to buy camera for OctoPrint , and I'm thinking to go on RPi camera V2 with 8Mp.
How well does this camera work with OctoPrint and won't be too much hot for the camera in the enclosure ?

Thank you in advance.

RPI CAMERAS WORK.  I bought logtech and cheap cameras off ebay.  They cost. less than $20 and work fine.

I have a custom mount for them.  It works well.

I really like the RPi cameras. Being parallel (judging by the number of conductors) does add any data to USB subsystem.

One weakness is the ribbon cable.  It can fail and I have replaced mine a couple of times.

Although I haven't had a ribbon cable failure, I see your point. I bought a bunch of different lengths off eBay for pennies. Not that sold on the connectors either but net net I'd stick with the RPi.

The ribbon cable is mechanically more difficult to manipulate into the desired position but it works fine otherwise.  I printed a Pi enclosure and a PiCam mount pole.  Due to the mechanical limitations of a shorter ribbon cable I was limited in how to position the camera pole mount and ended up just double-face tape sticking the pole mount on top of the Pi Case.

Until it bends and stops working.  I printed a case with a means to route the cable.  It bent while printing twice so I abandoneded.  I must just have bad luck with them.

I haven’t had any issues with it. I like my Wyze cameras a lot better but the Rpi will do the job. I have both Wyze and rpi installed inside the enclosure. I haven’t done any really long prints with ABS or PC but 24 h PETG jobs never heated the enclosure to more than 37 degrees Celsius. I doubt that’s too much to affect the electronics

I have Wyze Cam V2’s on all my printers. https://www.amazon.com/agp/product/B076H3SRXG/

Great image quality, and the Wyze software for iOS and Android is excellent, great for timelapse photography. Much less arcane than Octoprint.

The Wyze Cam also supports infrared imaging, for night views. Etc etc.

Easy to mount into the 3030 groove on Minis and Mk3Ss using this adapter: https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/32687

I have them mounted so they show me the complete print plate. In addition I do have Pi cams on some machines mounted to look straight at the nozzle (the wyze cam is too big).

Do the Wyze cameras work with octoprint?

Not out of the box as by default it uses wifi not USB to deliver video.

However, it looks like there are some efforts to make it work with Octoprint:

https://community.octoprint.org/t/wyze-cam-v2-support/6651/9

https://medium.com/@adamargo/using-a-wyze-cam-with-octoprint-on-a-raspberry-pi-7a1c886b9afe

I can’t personally vouch for any of these efforts but they sure look interesting. Frankly, I prefer to spend my time in the Wyze software looking at my prints than the usability disaster called Octoprint.

"usability disaster called Octoprint"    To be able to send print ready data directly from a slicer to a printer and initiate printing surely is the height of usability, especially when you compare it to the alternatives. I suspect you're referring to the UI? Lets explore the alternatives

SDcard - seriously?

Proterface - do you really trust a modern PC to stream data at an appropriate rate over a multi hour period?

Wifi SDcard - Assuming you can get it to work. Don't you need an adapter and to initiate printing from printer control?

I don't know why but Wyze gear is cheap as chips in the US but silly money here.

I do nto agree with Octoprint.  Just two benefits of this software are that you can remotely manage prints and track data.  I hope Prusa Control overcomes a few of the weaknesses, but Octoprint is a fantastic alternative.  I have 16 going on 17 printers and this allows me to monitor and remotely manage them all.

No disagreement from me. Of course I was referring to the UI/UX, not the functionality. Who wants to use SD cards or USB sticks? All I was saying is that to monitor my prints visually or to create timelapse movies I’d much rather go into the Wyze software than Octoprint.

Yes, I’m actually running it on most of my machines. Nicer interface.  But I only use it for job control and as an archive for gcode files. I don’t have any need for  its online slicing options so I don’t care that its slicer is many versions behind. It has a very nice queue management system.

How do you integrate the Wyze Camera?  I guess I do not under stand doing timelapse with the Wyze.  Octolapse is so smooth with USB cameras.

There really isn’t any integration to speak of. In the Wyze software there’s a time lapse option where you set the start time, end time, and frequency of taking a picture. That’s all.

The Wyze also continuously records on its internal SD card so even if I didn’t explicitly record a run I can go back and check in case something went wrong.

Nothing wrong with Octoprint, I just ended up preferring a different workflow.

@fuchsr

Understood.  The thing I like about octoprint is that it shoots an image with the hotend at a certain location and the timelapse show the image growing magically.
