OctoPi but printing from SD?

Hi,
I've read about many issues, people have with using octoprint.
I'm planning to use a raspberry pi zero w directly on the Einsy-Board. But I don't want to use it as a slicer or as a print-host. I only want to use it to watch the printer during printing via WiFi.

So my questions are:

1. Is it possible to print still from SD while octoprint is running?

2. If yes, is it possible to watch all data during a print from SD over octopi?

3. Will I have the same issues (for example with LA) or not?

Greetings
Stephan

Yes, you can still print from the SD card with octoprint running on the Pi. You can monitor temperatures, watch the print on the web stream, but you can't view the g-code progress. I'm not sure about the communications issues- that depends on what firmware you have on your Prusa. I use the latest release candidate with LA without issues.

Why do you want to use a Pi Zero directly connected? It's so much simpler to just use a Pi B via USB.

Because it's possible and so I want to use the feature 😉
But as I wrote I only want to use the Pi for watching the printer and not have to go downstairs where the printer stays.

I bought a pi0W before becoming aware of the high load on the processor. There is some info on the Octoprint website regarding wirelessly loading to the SD but due to the limitations of the serial communication it's apparently really slow. I have no idea how slow 'really slow' is though so happy to hear of anyone more experienced. See https://discourse.octoprint.org/t/upload-to-sd-takes-too-long/231

I streamed a print through Pronterface connected to the USB port last week and got the impression that quality suffered slightly on the rounded corners. Will need to investigate further but I'm pretty convinced I'll stick with printing from the SD. Now only if my SD reader didn't get ruined by inserting a SD card into it 🙄

Yes you can. I'd recommend taking the SD card out of the printer and writing gcode files to it with your PC. As ewout.s alluded to, transferring files to the SD card with OctoPI (i.e. via serial connection) is _really_ slow... as in several minutes for a several MiB file.

Uploading to the SD card doesn't even seem to work. Uploading to the Pi "locally", though, and printing from there does work.

I'm running the latest Prusa firmware and the most up-to-date Octoprint firmware on a Pi 3B.

I had thought that uploading to the SD card on the Prusa I3 MK3 and printing from there would be more bulletproof, but it just isn't happening.

As others have said you can continue to print for the SD card. I use the Pi Cam V2 with Pi0W for monitoring my prints via PrusaPrint. There is a useful cover with door for the Einsey box - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2792071 . This allows for easy access to the Pi0W should you ever need to get to the camera connection or MicroSD on board. I also use this camera mount https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2736439 . I think its the best one out there.

if you mean print percentage, there is a setting in slic3r that puts the estimated time into gcode. I'm not at a computer to point you to it, but it's there.
I don't think I've used anything but octoprint for printing since the day I got my printer running and with no failures on it's part. iconsider it a vital part of my mk3.

and we’ll be saying a big hello to all intelligent life forms everywhere … and to everyone else out there, the secret is to bang the rocks together, guys.
