hey

I wondered if anyone had a hex file to share for my MK3 - allowing the volcano mod to not drive itself in to the bed when Z calibrating!

I know it needs 8.5mm less of play thanks to the extra height in the volcano block - but compiling the source is beyond me..

Ive tried in vain to find someone who might want to share - if you could let me know where to look, Id be very grateful

Hi Andrew,

you don't need a different firmware for the volcano. Just print this mod: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2989361

Martin did a really good job! My assembly instructions can be found here:  https://www.thingiverse.com/make:667280

Then install it an use STOCK Firmware! I like to keep it that way to maintain an easy upgrade path with prusa firmware.

I just installed my volcano yesterday and the print quality is the same with a 0.4 nozzle x as before. So now i can focus on the speed dail in:-)

I am having the same problem. I have installed all the hardware no problem but having problems re-righting the file 😫. Did you manage to get sorted? Were you able to send the edited file?

Hello Andrew,

Do you have the MK3 or the MK3S as at them moment the MK2.5S/MK3S has 5mm Z travel over the MK3 but the firmware still has the same limits. This means you have a 50/50 chance of getting an MK3S working with a Volcano fitted with no changes to hardware or firmware as there is a couple of mm tolerancing in the original Prisa design.. See the reply I made to a recent comment about my mod.

Hello Travis,

Yes the Z axis parts are necessary for all versions including the MK2.5S. The Volcano heater block is 8.5mm taller than the stock V6 one. The Z axis parts raise the Z-Motors by this 8.5mm to enable the full travel. It is a result of this that makes the X-Carriage replacement necessary so that the cable outlet is lowered and as a result will still clear the frame at maximum Z.

Without the mod on a MK2.5 and an MK3 fitting a Volcano reduces the Z travel by 8.5mm and requiers custom firmware. With the MK2.5S and MK3S as the S variants gain 5mm this only reduces the Z by 3.5mm right at the edge of the physical tolerances of the printer and it is 50/50 as to weather you could get away without modified firmware. However as the MK2.5S and MK3S have that extra 5mm a future official version of the firmware might make use of it and as such this should not be relied on.

Regards,
Martin
