UK Gov approved 3D safety enclosure - The Kora 3D sc-01

Hello fellow makers,

this is my first post on this forum.

I was lookng at gettig a enclosure for my MK3 about to be upgraded to become a MK3s 🙂

I read an article that you should have an enclouse that filters out 'bad' fumes and partical. The UK Gov Health & Saftey Exec has posted a 4 year study and has recommend that all  FDM users should think of using a enclosure with some type of filter. http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrpdf/rr1146.pdf

I then found this Printer enclousure https://www.kora3d.com/sc-01-3d-printer-safety-cabinet#description .

Question what do you think? will it fit a MK3?The design is UK Gov HSE approved. i've not seen that on a enclosure before?

the price is a little steep.

thanks in advance

Nick from the 3D Attic

The thing is enclosures are hard to buy inthe UK

Neat product.  You need a distributor in the US.

It is gorgeous, but at $670 without accessories and "Automatic Fire Extinguisher, Heat Sensor Alarm, LED Lighting kit shown are NOT INCLUDED", I think I'd look for something cheaper. I suspect they're targeting schools and businesses with deeper pockets that want a turn-key system with a guarantee of suitability.

Size-wise it's a good fit so long as you don't use a frame-mounted spool holder. The question then becomes how to feed filament.

I would rather build this one, if it needs to be fancy:

RE: UK Gov approved 3D safety enclosure - The Kora 3D sc-01

Hmmm - reading the report, the first concerns started with this paragragh:

When printing with PLA filament, particle emission rates varied from 3.26 x 109 to 8.23 x 1010 particles.min-1 and average particle sizes varied from 69 nm to 24 nm as the nozzle temperature ranged from 220 C to 240 C (measurements made with Testo DISCmini).

240c is a bit hot to PLA... since most mfgs say 220c tops.

Then there's figures 11 and 12 - claiming particle size varies by printer model for the same PLA.  17 um vs 60 um.  Whaaat?   It's either printer make or the difference of 220c vs 230c ... but for either to cause a tripling in particle size is nonsensical.  Then later in material losses by temps, PLA gained mass at 250c ... GAINED 6% !  Wow.  Who knew heating PLA causes it to gain weight.  That might be why it oozes: sucking mass from the air around it...

All sorts of questions come to mind ... but primary is did these guys even read the equipment manuals for instruments they were using?

Some of the results are probably valid, but just skimming and I found these study busters leads me to doubt the veracity of the work as a whole.

Hi all,

Discount Code added 'Chat10'

I have ordered this item direct from Kora 3D. I ordered the cabinet SC-01 , light, smoke alarm and fire suppression.   I have managed to get a 10% discount for any one that wants to also purchase this for you all, i got the same discount and not profitting from this. just go to the Kora 3D website https://www.kora3d.com/shop/kora-sc-01-universal-safety-cabinet/sc-01-3d-printer-safety-cabinet place your order and at check out add the discount code CHAT10 Shipping is free for all UK orders but international orders will have add shipping.

The filter is good for 12 months or 400 hrs and Kora 3D is going to add a replacment unit to the shop with a "send your old filter back" and get £30 discount off the new one. I'm not sure what the final proce will be for the new filter.

The code is valid up until Sept 5th 2019

kind regard

Nick

The study looks really like a paid one. If I would compare emissions filtered/unfiltered from any device, I would pick the same device and make sure same conditions are met. Why are they using Makerbot outside and some less/unknown device which is also from the same company like the enclosure inside the enclosure?

I've seen already better emission measurements and yes, it's well known about the emissions but what we don't know is how harmful they are to the human body over time. Anyway reducing any emissions is a good thing.

Hi all,

This new member is no stoorge but a genuine hobbyist. The discount code was some thing i asked for myself and then thought, lets see if i can get something for the fellow makers. If you want to buy one please please pay the FULL PRICE. Go ahead and contact the company ask for Audrey, she is the person who is on the chat, hence the disountcode CHAT10 and ask about the guy who purchased the SC-01. I can show you my paypal account. The only thing I selling is good will. Perhaps you should step out in the fresh air instead of saying good job, thank you.

Exactly what a stooge would say...

Just kidding. No worries. It's nothing personal. We get a few drive-by "innovative" marketing strategies, so everyone's a bit unsure when a new poster pushes something rather than asking questions. The poor moderators are kept pretty busy stamping out spam, so the community likes to keep an eye on things.

It looks like an interesting -- if pricey -- alternative. Please post an update with your findings and experiences, particularly relating to the reality of using one with a Prusa printer. Knowing it fits and works is useful first-hand information. It may be out of reach for many hobbyists, but if nothing else, it may stimulate thinking about what is an appropriate commercial product to address these needs.

Have fun with it.

Hi Nick,

Wow, I must have hit some sweet spot. Sorry for that.

No need to provide any proof of purchase or any names from the company. Your posts are still here and I haven't reported them as spam/advertisement. So please don't feel personally attacked. I only provided feedback how this thread looks to me.

You've asked for measurements of your existing MK3 (why not just measure yourself?) and leaning towards a general discussion about enclosures/filters for this printer. Couple hours later you're saying you've purchased this enclosure (without really any discussion) and we should support this company. Why?

Maybe that helps to understand my suspicion. If not, it's also fine. Like bobstro, I would also like to see/hear any mid/long term experience with enclosures.

As a moderator I'll throw in my 2 cents. I was the one that approved the initial post, with much hesitation as I have the same thoughts as many of you. It seems a little sketchy but not enough to keep the post off.

The second post is more concerning with the discount code. But it was allowed as well.

Now, if I were to make an enclosure like this I can get off the shelf parts and a 12U server cabinet and spend half what they are charging. The most costly parts would be the cabinet itself and the filtration.

All,

no offence taken on the remarks but i wanted to give my opinion that ima legit person. The feedback is helpful and i can understand the skepticism. In regards to why i purchased so quickly, i ended up doing a lot of research my self and found more articles claiming the same and this made up my mind. I have soon to be teenage children and i want them share my passion and have a hobby with me. So protection and keeping them safe was on my mind. The next thing it says HSE tested and ,to be honest i need to build an enclosure and this ticked all the boxes, so just buy it! which is what i did.

I have been delivered mycabinet today and will build this over the weekend, time permitting, and share my unbaised thoughts.

Not bad for a first post, tried to be helpful, get called a stooge, almost have my post kicked and maybe a  product review at the end...LOL

have a good weekend

Nick

RE: UK Gov approved 3D safety enclosure - The Kora 3D sc-01

Well - it is the 400 hours before you need to buy a new filter that got me laughing.  Let's see - 24/7 so the math says every two weeks I need one of these filters they say will last years?   False advertising right there.  The best part is the replacement filter is NOT available on their website at any price. So after a few weeks of use you have a metal box that does nothing.

Then in figure 17, nearly every one of the control readings is the same value as the test readings.  So OFF is producing as much pollution as ON ??  Only the Lactide readings show any significant difference between controls and measured values.  And USDA says these are biologically insignificant in mammals (aka harmless to humans).

Then there's this tidbit from the Crown that supports the "This is third party rubbish" using a public office's logos to promote misinformation: and is showing that Kora is in DIRECT VIOLATION to the Crown rules and regs.

Statement of principles for joint badging/endorsing third party guidance

HSE considers when it is appropriate to endorse guidance publications produced by others and to allow the use of HSE’s logo. Decisions currently take account of the following considerations:

  • whether HSE has been actively involved, subject to resources being available, in producing guidance with third parties to address a particular need, eg regulation, topic or specific industry issue that other HSE guidance does not already address;

  • whether common topics (eg risk assessment, health surveillance, workplace transport etc) are described in a way that is consistent with HSE’s own guidance;

  • whether the guidance sets out what is required to comply with the law and makes it clear where the guidance goes beyond compliance eg to meet a specific business or sector need;

  • whether robust arrangements are in place to monitor the effectiveness  of the guidance and ensure it is reviewed and kept up to date;

  • that the use of HSE’s logo does not provide commercial advantage to the author organisation.

I will Tim-m30. If its a matter of getting a filter and cut to size option  then i may look at that. I did a google search and found a few HEPA filters that were under £20
