Rasberry Pi 4

I have spent hours searching for an answer before posting. I am looking for what all I need hardware wise to use a Rasberry pi 4 as an octoprint server. I see numerous posts on how to make the older Rasberry Pi's work, but none on the new ones. Everyone seems to do such a great job with instructions and build blogs I feel like I am just missing something.

How does the Rasberry Pi 4 connect to the Prusa i3 Mk3S? I am comfortable soldering a pinout on to a Rasberry but it looks like it comes with a pinout already which would not be correct for the Prusa. Does it connect via USB? I see some people are powering via USB external from the printer, is that still required? My printer shipped today so I am trying to get ahead and have the Rasberry Pi built before the printer gets here.

RE: Rasberry Pi 4

Hi wminear,

I didn't know that there were different instructions for using a Raspberry 4 than the Raspberry 3 with a prusa. The 4 has the same USB connection as the 3 so connecting shouldn't be a problem.

I'm in a long print now, so i can't test it right now.

I connect mine thought the header pins or USB depending on the printer.

I use the simple USB cable ... and ignored trying to make the pi a monolithic part of the printer. This way if the printer breaks, I know it is the printer.

The Pi4 requires more power than I'd be comfortable sucking from the Einsy USB.

ps: YSB -USB - SST .. hey typing was never my strong suit.

The Pi4 need about 3A Current  to work.... to connect it like Pi3 or Zero won‘t work. I‘m about to connect it to the PSU with a Step-Down-Module, but not sure if it works 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have had decent success connecting it for power off the Rambo pins.

@andi-g

Marius Hornberger has a video on YouTube where is sets up a Raspberry Pi with a stepdown converter.  Seems very doable.
