E3D Hemera integrated one piece Extruder. I want one on my MK3S

I have been watching the Hemera for over a year being developed over at Hogwarts by Harry Potters fatter brother with the cursed hair cut.  It looks good.  I thought my days of upgrading my MK3S were over but I have one more upgrade on my wish list.

It should also improve the MMU2. Do it if you like. You only need to adjust the firmware to make it work.

I will wait for the i3 MK4 upgrade.

RE: E3D Hemera integrated one piece Extruder. I want one on my MK3S

Having seen the announcement and a bit of the previews, I'm interested in this too... but I don't think I'm ready to bite given the challenges and my lack of time to try and properly address them, namely:

The Hemera extruder has a different orientation... so the carriage probably needs a substantial redesign to fit it

I print in a heated enclosure and need to be sure the new heatsink can properly cool at a 50C ambient (probably can, especially with all the metal, but I'd prefer to see tests)

I need a solution for the MK3S MMU2S filament sensor too, since I've got the MMU2S and the existing filament sensor has already been a headache.... likely need to design a couple parts to fit on the top of the Hemera to get it working properly

But that flex performance seems really great.... and I've been interested in ways to reduce stringing on flex parts, print more flexible filaments with the MMU2S, and handle stringy support filaments like PVA - could be a real nice upgrade.

Very interesting, but none of the guides they have are for the Prusa, so I am passing on this one.

@cybrsage

Very early for the Prusa.  It will come.

I'm also interested in upgrading my M3S and also have an MMU2 that I've yet to install. I saw Sanjay's (Hey Sanjay is all about function over form) presentation at ERRF in October. Very impressed with the thought that has gone into this product. I was assured that there were persons working on integration with the Prusa but I haven't seen any work yet. The E3D blog page for the Hemera here lists various upgrade guides but the one for the MK3S is indicated as "To be released soon".

I have a $100 credit with E3D from a canceled tool changer order. Now I just need to decide whether I should get the Bowden version or not.

Looking forward to see this extruder in action. It need to prove itself reliable and easy to maintain before mounting it to MK2/3.

All the FDM challanges like heat creeps, cloggs,... are still there. The question is how much better handles Hemera this.

After months of frustration with my Ender-3, I purchased an Titan Aero in 1.75 and 3.00mm.  I am think about putting one of these on my CR-10S Pro.  Heck, maybe I might buy another MK3S to place one of these on it.

Maybe, the Boxing Day Sale?

Noob question, what problem(s) does this extruder address?

Direct drive can be a huge improvement in several means for a Bowden printer.  For non-Bowden, gear extrudes may improve certain filaments such as flexible.  I order one and will post more later.  I am putting it on a Creality printer.

Compared to the standard MK3 extruder it will significantly improve printing with flexible filament. The weight of the whole unit should also be lower but I don't think that will improve quality of the prints much.

You will have to give a little to put this on the Mk3 - most notably, there would be no filament sensor.

Also, a PINDA mounting solution would need to be found and a firmware change to account for a different PINDA to nozzle tip x/y offset.

Worth mentioning that E3D's store page lists a guide for an MK3 conversion in the table of guides, but as "coming soon".

The filament sensor would be the tricky part, you're already going to be manipulating firmware configuration stuff with the extruder gearing and stuff... but it should be doable - for example just watching the displacement of the lever with the existing filament sensor by enclosing it or something.  I think for a proper conversion for it, the filament sensor is a must - no hope for using it with the MMU2S without it, and I think flexibles and softer support filaments on the MMU are probably the thing that would see the most benefit from it.

Is there any reason you couldn't just create a housing that incorporates the metal ball filament sensor above the extruder? Obviously it isn't a perfect solution and increases bulk, but if you're creating a mount anyways...

E3DSupport has posted some files for the Mk2 and Mk3 (no real instructions yet on their blog however) - https://www.thingiverse.com/e3dsupport/designs

RE: E3D Hemera integrated one piece Extruder. I want one on my MK3S

I am a big fan of e3d and have a lot of their kit modding other printers but this one I would skip for mk3s. The positioning of the filament sensor would mean a firmware mod, and the Prusa developed firmwares, with all the testing and fixing, is one of the benefits of the printer.  So its a no from me.

Their kit is excellent though - would be a good upgrade for another other printer.
