Wanted All in One Software Package

I'm new to 3D printing but I'm not new to PC's, networks and a little coding. I've been using Pslicer and Cura but Pslicer seems to be a better fit for my Prusa although Cura is easier to use. I've grown in a short time to appreciate Pslicer much more. However, for me there are four features I want that Pslicer doesn't have. One, I need remote access. Two, USB connectivity. Three, camera management and four slicing. I know there is Pronterface but this software seems clunky. Also, it's USB connectivity has been sketchy and I know this to be the Pronterface software because with Cura it's bullet proof. I also know that I could use Octoprint. I was gong to do this as I have several Raspberry Pi's. But this to has limitations. I can't slice with a Raspberry Pi. Not to mention I have my Prusa sitting right next to a file server that's mostly ideal so I want to use this PC for slicing, connecting, remote access and camera management. My question is this. What software free or pay could you recommend so that I can accomplish this?

Do you want this new all in one software to also edit images, videos, and suggest recipes?

At some point, functionality needs to be separated so coding expertise can be used efficiently.  Someday an AI can stitch it all together, but until then, be happy you have different tools for different tasks.

You could always install Octoprint on the File Server.

Won't I have to do this through VM ware of some sort? I'm already running an OS on the file server. It's Octoprint a stand alone?

What OS? A simple solution might be to run Octoprint on a Linux VM under something like VirtualBox unless you've got a preferred virtualization solution. Unless, of course, your file server is Linux already.

  • Options 2 & 3 (USB and camera) are easily provided by Octoprint.
  • Option 1 depends on your server OS, so you'll need to specify that. Presumably you want the entire slicer functionality to be available remotely.
  • Option 4 is your slicer software, which (depending on what you want to run) may be able to print directly to Octoprint via a network connection (even if on the same host).

From what you've written, it sounds like simply running PrusaSlicer on your server (Windows, Linux or MacOS), using whatever tools that OS provides for remote access (RDP, VNC) on your server, and a RPi running Octoprint will do pretty much what you want.
