Infill motion getting stuck and y-axis shifting on layers

Finished putting together my Prusa I3 Pro B (acrylic) 3D printer the other day and I have yet to get a satisfactory print out of it. Closest I’ve got to a good first layer recently is shown in the attached photo - the printer seems to get stuck doing the diagonal infills and then corrects itself but carries on at the shifted Y position so prints get lower and lower as they progress.

Layers also were shifting in the y axis when I tried to make the calibration cube - only really improved when I loosened up the belts and tried to smooth the z axis smooth rod holes, which were very tight.

Best settings I’ve got with my PLA so far (that doesn’t end up with the nozzle smooshing the plastic around after a few infill lines) is 220C extruder and 70C bed. (I’ve experimented with loads of other temps. )

Has anyone seen anything similar to this, or have an idea as to why this is happening? Thanks guys
