Selftest - Y Axis Length

Happy Holidays !
After assembling the MK3 kit and updating the firmware, I seem to be running into an error with the selftest when calibrating the x / y / z.

Selftest error! Please check:
Axis Length
Axis Y

I've checked the forums and when I saw a similar post regarding the X axis, I went back and double checked all the zip ties to make sure none of them were poking up. Nothing seems to be blocking the bed but clearly theres an error. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks I'll give this a try. The wrap was pretty stiff when installed. How loose did you need to make it?

EDIT: I gave that a shot but it didn't make any difference. Any other suggestions out there?

are you in normal mode or stealth ?

the selftest only works reliable when you are in normal mode

Hello Felbel. Also make sure the pulley is properly seated on the axis of the Y motor. I forgot about that during my first selftest and had the Y axis error 😳

I've confirmed that the machine is not in stealth mode, thanks that was a good suggestion that I had not previously checked. The pulley looks like it's seated correctly. I've played with the wire wrap / nylon a bit more to make sure it's not too stiff, that doesn't seem to have made a difference.

I'm noticing that the machine thinks that the y axis is at 0 when it looks like it should actually be at 100.

Re: Selftest - Y Axis Length

I had this issue, like others, it was the pully on the motor. Move the bed with your hand, on mine, it was harder to move at the end of travel. I shifted the pully so that at either end of travel the belt doesn't bind and this fixed the issue.

Now if only there were a solution to the other end binding no matter how you attempt to adjust it. The part doesn't seem to be designed properly, everyone is reporting the same problem, unfortunately.

What part is that?

Re: Selftest - Y Axis Length

I have built X,Y,Z stages for 20+ years on and off. Couple of things.

  • The slider rails may not be parallel and are binding at one end. Loosen the brackets that hold the slider rails and drive the stage front to back by hand a few times. Tighten the brackets when the stage is close to the brackets you need to tighten.
You said you have check for obstructions. Over 20 years of building stages I can do this by touch. Push it back and forth and see if you feel anything hitting.
Give the slider rail a like lube. Lubit8, TriFlow, or any light oil should work. Just a drop or two will do.
I also have what I call my Stupid check list because I answer calls from Field Service Engineers and I have fixed a lot of problems over the phone asking obvious questions. FSE's get mad at me but I can hear in their voice when I ask something that they forgot.
Cables, Brackets, printer bed hitting something outside of printer on the table, tie-wraps, Check underneath the Y bed for other obstructions.
  • If I had my printer in front of me I would go check and make up a complete list.

Thanks for all the replies! When I posted the issue on the evening of the 24th I really didn't expect to get any replies until the 27th or 28th. After trying all the suggestions posted, I ended up removing the pulley and reassembling. That seems to have fixed the issue, so there must have been something that was slightly out of alignment.

    Thanks again and happy holidays!

In my case it was loose wire that is attached to the bed at the back (little black one that comes out of the nylon wrapper).
It was preventing the bed from going all the way back.

I unscrewed the connector, pulled the wire into that nylon wrapper and put the connector back together.

That solved the problem for me.

This was my issue as well! The zip tie was in the way in the front - just moved it down a little bit and the self-test passed this check.
