Re: more detailed documentation about the menu

PR is sending me a new probe. Thanks for all your suggestions. The community is a great resource but in the case of documentation of the menu, I think we'd be best served by PR managed, online documents.

hope the replacement part does the trick! i did check z=0 on mine and it certainly does change from 0 to 1 if it is brought into close contact with either metal or magent. I lifted the bed up to the sensor and it changed to 1.

do they think it is not sensing? there are other areas that show values for the pinda, for instance in the support you can check the pinda temperature.

Hi Chris,
This is another area - interplay of menu items - where PR could provide insight through their documentation. For example, can the probe report temperature and still not recognize that it's in the presence of metal? Probably depends on the possible failure modes. PR would know.
Ken

Thanks,
Ken

can the probe report one item and not another, yes absolutely because they are different sensors that make up the pinda. I don't know for sure in your case which are failed, but the red light coming from the pinda indicates power, the temp, which is actually new for the mk3 and not in the mk2, can report what it has for data even if the magnetic sensing is not working and vice versa.

My guess for the firmware, which is still a beta version at this point, that the menu items not in the manual are being added when requested by tech support to help them diagnose. since they have the sensors and the data it makes a support call much much quicker.

I hope your replacement fixes the problems. And i have no doubt that prusa will eventually have the information you want in the manual. but it will be an eventual situation. because of the demand for this printer, and the number of newbies who are buying it, and i do not count you among them, there is a lot of support going on. With support handling multiple chats at a time. I needed a replacement x belt and was sent a y belt. not because the person i spoke to was incompetent but because they are dealing with so many people at once it is likely overwhelming them. A long ago, I worked for Gateway computers, There were days in phone support where the only time the queue dropped below 99 calls in queue was when the phones went down. I credit Prusa for keeping in his house, rather than doing what we did and hiring outsourcers that knew nothing of our products and threw parts at every problem because it got someone off that call. demand built up by 3 months of ordering without shipping any will eventually even out from the tsunami that it is right now and things will get better.

i am serious tho, if you have other questions on the menu, I'd be glad to look, in this case i learned something that may be valuable to me in the future. and when i'm not printing i enjoy learning about the printer. Jo had a new video recently where he showed 5 things you might not know. and while i knew 4 of the 5 things, the quick z height access was awesome

A bit more insight into the "Show End Stops" menu item... I received this query from PR after I told them that I had received the new PINDA probe and installed it and things appeared to be working but that I still didn't understand the menu item:

Please check if the PINDA is working along the whole X axis. Follow "calibration > show end stops" from the LCD menu, then put something metallic close to the PINDA probe just beneath it and check if the value of Z changes from 0 to 1 on the LCD. Please do several tests changing the extruder position along the X axis.
You can even repeat the test plugging the PINDA to the X or Y endstop port, and look at the X or Y value this time, just to make sure it is not just a bad wiring.

I did the test and the probe was behaving as they described all along the x-axis. The "show end stops" value for Z is dynamic and real-time. The values for X and Y are static and haven't changed from X1 and Y1. It may be that these values are set early in the calibration process.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: more detailed documentation about the menu

There are no X and Y endstops. Only PINDA, which acts as the Z end stop. So it makes sense that only the Z end stop value changes when you trigger the sensor with metal:-)

Re: more detailed documentation about the menu

There are "virtual endstops" generated based on the stepper drivers detecting stall current when the Y/X axis hit the end of the possible movement, which is generally quite set in stone once you finish up tightening the frame.

Yes and yes. It's the new grey pinda with a thicker cable. Thanks!

Thanks,
Ken

For those like me who found this message looking for the menu layout in the printer:
