MK3 asking me to unload filament multiple times during print.

Anyone else having this problem? Printing the stock files or a file I slice myself it keeps asking me to unload the filament when the optical sensor is on. Very annoying issue like it can’t see the filament at times.

I’m using Egyptian Blue Inland PLA.

Re: MK3 asking me to unload filament multiple times during print.

There is another thread on this, but essentially
Update the firmware
Turn sensor off
Turn Autoload off

Now it will allow manual load and unload and not ask for filament change

Thanks. Did they say if they’re fixing the sensor so we can actually use it?

I was having a lot of issues with this when the sensor was on. I updated to the new RC4 firmware yesterday, and have not had the issue in about 10 hours of printing. Layer shifts is a different story....

Check if the filament sensor is clean, there is special access point on the top of the extruder idler. You can use compressed air to clean it out.

I am having this now too with RC4 (was not before), but I also switched to a new filament color (light green). When I get a chance, I'll go back to silver and see if it is still happening.

Is the filament sensor color blind? That's odd that a filament color would affect it from working or not.

It is sensitive to some filaments according to Prusa. It's probably not the case here but I changed two variables at once so can't pin down the cause.

Re: MK3 asking me to unload filament multiple times during print.

I am having this issue with translucent green PETG
also on 3.1.1 rc4 b143
tried to turn sensor off mid print, print stopped, message appeared on screen advising I could not eject filament or similar,
I wasn't really paying attention, 😯 , print resumed after I pressed button again

I gave up on my filament sensor until this is all resolved. There are soo many variables that, although I like a challenge, I do not have the time to sort it out right now. A BIG thanks to those of you who are!!! I am really looking forward to using the run out feature. I have many rolls of filament that I am afraid to use because I am not sure if it will last the entire print. Filament joining looks like a PIA and I have not fooled with it.

LOL. I'm having visions of going to Thingyverse and seeing a model that holds a Sharpie against your filament to make a dark/ opaque line that the sensor will detect.

Re: MK3 asking me to unload filament multiple times during print.

Yes - I have the same issue. It printed just fine with the supplied gcode files and supplied silver PLA, but, having sliced own file and using Devil Design Light Blue PETG then I have multiple stoppages. It prints a few layers and then stops, moves to the corner and asks me to unload the filament.

I've turned off the filament sensor and this allows the print to complete, but, it's a bit disappointing - since the filament sensor and ability to not worry about run out was one of the key "new hot features" of the MK3. The Mk3 is also so quiet that I cant hear if the printer stopped or not!!!

It seems the printer was shipped to meet a deadline when there are still issue(s) to be resolved. I already updated the firmware- so hopefully this issue is something being worked on for the next update.

Re: MK3 asking me to unload filament multiple times during print.

I'm having this same issue with a newly delivered mk3 kit.

Is there a procedure for testing the filament sensor?

Yup, I'm having the same issue. running the latest firm 3.2.1. using Black PETG. Guess this "Bloody Smart" Machine isn't so smart.......

Re: MK3 asking me to unload filament multiple times during print.

I too am having the same issue with magenta PETG, and black TPU only. Here’s my take... I own 12 3D printers. Some in the $300 range, a couple in the $4000 range. Ultimately, my Prusas are the most reliable and consistent of all of them. For the price, I feel that I got way more for my money than with my ultimaker 3 or taz6. I’ve printed some mind numbing prints that I’ve not been able to pull off on any other machine. Yes, the prusa has a couple quirks, and is not perfect, but as i’ve Posted online elsewhere, it’s damn close. Filaments are all different. I don’t know if any printer that will eat every flavor of pasta you throw down it’s throat. Having to disable the sensor for a print or two...... is it really that huge of an inconvenience? I mean we’re really bitching about some “first world” problems here. I’ve had the pleasure (or displeasure) of dealing with many other companies who’s support absolutely sucks! I’m betting they’ll get to the bottom of it. I had a ticking power supply, they sent me a new one. I got the wrong pinda probe in my kit, they sent me a new one. I found this thread because I am having the same problem, don’t get me wrong, but the majority of people I see with issues are people with kits. (Like me) I rebuilt my machine 3 times before I got it “perfect”.

Hello,

give this new part a try. It solves this problem without firmware change. 😉
Prusa I3 MK3 - New filament sensor adapter in a separate housing and here.

Re: MK3 asking me to unload filament multiple times during print.

Also having the same problem. I am printing Black PETG at the moment and have been asked several times to unload and then load again during about 5 hours printing.

I will disable the filament sensor.
