MK3 and Palette+

Is anyone attempting to use a Palette+ ( https://www.mosaicmanufacturing.com/pages/technology ) with the MK3?

I'm looking at whether it may be a workable (and already-shipping) alternative to the MK3 MMU.

The Palette's method of cutting filaments together and fusing them strikes me as a little Rube Goldbergish, but it's been out for a while and I don't see a huge number of complaints in their forum. Wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience, or plans to try to make it work.

I would think it would be impossible to line up on any printer because all it will take is one tiny mistake after the splicing and the colors would be skewed.

it certainly works, and this is version 2 of the machine. the real problem is the price. we need an open source one.

Because the people that spent months and months developing this system aren't supposed to earn any money?

Honestly... the Palette + is full of good reviews...

There is even some comparisons with the MK2S MMU. It's a bit pricey but for someone with a lot of printers it may be a better choice than the MMU since you can use it with any printer =)

I've ordered a Palette+ and will report back how it works. It will still be a couple weeks before my MK3 ships, but I expect I'll be able to figure out how well the Palette+ works before I have to decide whether to cancel my MK3 MMU order... 😀

Something I learned but didnt expect is the palette still uses purge blocks. Cutting the filament led me to believe they can avoid this but they still have to purge to eliminate color bleeding.

Combine that with an $800 price tag and the complicated print setup process and it doesn’t seem worth it.

Just some extra info.

That said, their purge blocks do seem smaller. I’ll probably go Prusa MMU though

Purge towers are unavoidable with a single extruder design.

I agree that the whole thing seems Rube Goldbergerish. On the other hand, it's available today, and I'm not seeing as many problems as people are reporting with the MK2 MMU. Even if the MMU is the better solution in the long run (and I think it may be), the Palette+ looks more mature right now.

Re: MK3 and Palette+

One thing to note with the Palette+ is that the filaments being spliced have to have the same melting temperature.

Re: MK3 and Palette+

What limits the Palette+ is that all of the materials have to be printed at the same temperature. I'd check out reviews for soluble supports and mixing different kinds of materials (i.e. PLA and PETG)

To be perfectly honest, I have never seen any solid evidence that people are using the MMU with multiple material types, requiring multiple temperatures. It's supposed to work but I've never heard, read, or seen anyone actually doing it. Everything on Youtube related to the MMU has been about multiple colors, which is far less interesting.

Speak for yourself....I find the prospect of printing in multiple colors, even if it's the same material, really interesting and useful. Mixing materials in the same print is even more interesting, but for me that would just be gravy.

The more I think about this, the more I'm tempted to experiment with both the Palette+ and the MMU, since they seem to have different and complementary limitations. The big limitation on the MMU of course is the Bowden design, which makes flexible filaments much more challenging. Palette can't mix filament types which won't fuse, or which require temperatures over 230 to fuse. So no combining ABS and PLA in the same print (not that you're likely to succeed with that anyway).

I don't want to get into an argument of semantics but I didn't say multi-color is not interesting. It's just (far) less interesting than multi-material.

Consider that if you can do multi-material then you can do multi-color "for free". The inverse is not necessarily true.

Re: MK3 and Palette+

I wonder if you could add dye sublimation pigments above the hot end, a bit like sharpie colouring filament

Then there is: http://reprap.org/wiki/Diamond_Hotend

so you can build something like this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ordsolutions/rova4d-full-color-blender-3d-printer?ref=category&ref=discovery&term=3d%20printer

Seems that not too long ago I saw something about a company using printer ink in conjunction with 3D printing to basically "paint" filament as it was laid down. I would say I'm going crazy but as I have been there for years already...well you know.

da Vinci Color adds an inkjet layer. Mcor sells a machine that prints with sheets of printed paper for full color. Makers muse has gotten some millage out of spray paint and clear/white fillament (your millage may very not responsible for nozzle clogs!)

The Mcor is definitely not a hobby-level printer, not even their new "desktop" version. Any company that says, "Contact a salesperson for pricing" isn't selling to consumers.

The da Vinci is an interesting approach, and the price is at least in the same galaxy as hobbyist gear. But they require proprietary filament and ink, making the consumables mildly eye-watering. I'd also be leery of buying one, since there's no reviews on Amazon and it's been out a while. Makes me think it's not selling well. If they discontinue it, you're stuck with a paperweight given the proprietary consumables.

Hey it works fine for me. Here are some of parts I made to mount it. Hope it helps.
