Re: Raspberry Pi and Camera Setup

Ok, got the USB webcam semi working. I can go to the snapshot url and see that it has taken a picture. I still don't have the picture on the control tab locally but it works externally and that's all that matters.

This should work until my new pi camera comes in Tuesday.

Hey Peter,

Do you have any resources you can recommend on how to pull the 12v rail from the power supply and convert to 5v?

I am a novice with electronics and assume it would just be a splice in and a buck–boost converter but as I don't have my printer yet I cant seem to wrap my head around it.

Anyone have a youtube video of this project? Don't want to pull amperage of an already taxed Rambo but want to end up with clean instal with minimal wires.

Hi Ross

I appreciate that you have been running OctoPi powered by your RAMBo, but just because your configuration works for you doesn't mean that it will work for everyone and their various configurations of OctoPi.

Until such time as I have sat down and worked out what power is required by my PI (and I know that figure is at least 1Amp), what is available from the RAMBo (that would be the 5Amp fuse, less power required for the extruder heater, logic, fans etc - a minimum of 3 Amps) and what the on-board voltage regulator can/is supplying), I would advise using a separate power rail for the Pi.

Potentially breaking a RAMBo (which I seem to have done yesterday, but that's another story...) for the sake of €1's worth of components and 30 minutes work does not seem to be a good idea.

The Raspberry Pi can draw in excess of 2 Amps, so you need a decent buck converter (most cheap ones are only 1Amp as supplied). Here's one that will do what you need: http://www.banggood.com/DC-DC-Buck-Converter-Step-Down-Module-High-Power-Low-Ripple-Adjustable-Power-Supply-Module-p-1056639.html?rmmds=search

Simply take a pair of wires from a spare PSU output connect to the buck converter, measure and adjust the output and wire the output to the Pi.

Then design and print your case design and install.

I have used these to make it a little easier on wiring. Just wire it in to the 12v on the power supply and you have a 5V 3A USB plug that you can connect the pi into.

Re: Raspberry Pi and Camera Setup

I power the Pi directly from the RAMBo to the +5v and ground gpio pins.
I love your setup.
Where exactly do you plug the Pi in the Rambo??

Re: Raspberry Pi and Camera Setup

I'm streaming from two Octopi's with one Logitech c310 connected to both, it was just to plug them in!
I used the Raspberry Pi cam before, but I got tired of the quality and the narrow focusing.
