Automatic Z height

So, you have probably covered this already, but why use a z probe? Why not use current detection like homing the x and y? I've had so many probe issues and crashing the z and digging up the bed with other printers, it seems to me to save money, reduce damage and complexity by simply touch probing and using current to detect the touch.. .thoughts?

I would guess that by the time you detected a current spike your nozzle would already have created a nice divot in the PEI. The X and Y carriages can bump into the frame without doing any harm.
