Prusament pla orange fails at first layer where prusament pla galaxy silver is perfect any tips?

I just got the printer a week ago and after a week of trying to get the orange pla filament to work, I switch to galaxy silver pla and its amazing with the exact temps 215 / 60, not a single flaw. The orange pla as you can see tends to bunch up which could be over extrusion? At first, I thought it was the layer height but given that the silver pla could not be more perfect it's throwing me off a bit.

Best Answer by Jessicka:

You sure that's PLA? The orange roll that comes with the kit is PETG. Please double check.

I am having the same problem with the Prusament PLA Orange. It seems stringy, poor adhesion, and not working on the first layer. Exact same settings on Silver PLA ( that shipped with the Printer) works flawlessly. Not sure why this is so. Maybe try temperature change on extruder?

Not sure what to try first.

Behrzilla (and johngpilot),

I will give you both the benefit of the doubt when you say you are printing with Prusa Orange PLA so if this is incorrect this will not be the complete solution to your problems.  Having said that...

Behrzilla, I looked carefully at the photo that you uploaded and immediately I note 2 problems which, once addressed, will likely solve 99% of your print problems.

First and foremost, your build plate (PEI sheet) is in desperate need of cleaning.  The advice given most by the very successful experts on this forum is to clean your build surfaces using unscented dish detergent (Dawn is a favorite in the U.S.A., Fairy in the UK), HOT water and clean paper towels.  Scrub the plate thoroughly with copious amounts of hot water and a little detergent using clean paper towels.  Dry using more clean paper towels and NEVER touch the plate surface with your fingers again! 😛 (Disclaimer: Prusa expressly recommends against this practice officially, however, since they also tend to treat the build plate as a consumable they offer no warranty in general for plate damage)

Now that you have your build plate clean your next mission is to perform a (several more) live-Z adjustments.  Looking closely at your picture I am actually surprised that you got any type of filament to stick as your live-Z is much too low.  I can see a "trough" in the middle of your skirt which is caused by the nozzle actually pushing material aside during the print.  Go to this extremely popular post, read the first post, download the sample file and follow the instructions. "Life adjust Z - my way".  Your goal is a relatively smooth coupon which peels from the bed as a single sheet.  Note that if you use Jeff's pre-sliced G-code he includes a two-step warmup procedure, the 160 C initial nozzle temperature is NOT a mistake or error.  The proper temperature will be set before printing commences.

Once you think you have a good test coupon post a picture here and the experts will chime in with any comments as necessary.

Good luck and welcome to the club!

Regards,

Steve

Hi, I have an exact problem with Prusament Orange PETG. Lack of adhesion and strings everywhere. My advice: change filament...

@steve-17

Well I had my doubts. Red, blue and yellow all worked great but orange would not stick. I used Dawn and a foam sponge that has a scrubbing side, then dryed it with a regular paper towel.

What can i say, it worked. Not sure if it was the Dawn or just scratching up the surface but either way it worked.

I know I'm 2 years late to this thread, but I just started using the Orange Prusament PLA and I'm having the same issue with the first layer. Ironically, I changed the filament to Black, Blue, and Gray. All three of those colors print PERFECTLY, adhere to bed PERFECTLY, and have no issues. The Prusament PLA was just opened from the factory seal Yesterday so I know it's not full of moisture. Can someone tell me what temperature they've set their nozzle and bed to in order to use orange prusament? I've tried 215Ccand 210c with the bed at 60c. I've cleaned the bed and tried with no adhesion, I've cleaned the bed and tried a glue stick, I've cleaned the bed and tried hairspray. I'm at a loss

OMG!!!!!! 🤪   How dumb am I? Back to school to learn to read all over again. I've been having exact same issues. Thank you Jessicka!!!   But.......... I see that I'm not the only one to make this simple mistake.   Perhaps Prusa might consider colour coding the labels for each type of filament to make it fool proof 🤣

I've also verified that it is indeed PLA and not PETG 🙂

My goodness! I completely forgot that the orange spool that came with the printer is PETG too. Been printing with PLA settings and even mixing in other PLA colors with the orange. I was really puzzled why I had so much trouble with the first layer and why the mixed prints were so weak.

Thanks Jessicka! I feel a right idiot, but I'm super happy that I got to the bottom of it 😀
