Leaving glob balls of PETG on my project

Periodically, my extruder leaves 3~5mm (3/16") glob balls on my print. It seems to be some sort of accumulation happening on the hot end, and then the glob drops onto the print, eventually.

1) What causes this accumulation to happen?

2) What is the typical solution to preventing it.

I am fairly diligent at cleaning the print nozzle before prints, using a soft wire brush while the nozzle is hot. So it is an accumulation during a job.

Any experience with this happening and in correcting it?

Some images would be very useful for analysis.

I had this problem with PETG printing until I installed the aftermarket silicone "diaper" that covers the hot end except for the extruder tip. That made a terrific difference.

amazon - E3D Silicone Sock - but showing almost 2month wait to ship due to quarantines

Don't forget local sources. There are plenty of 3D printing shops that have stock and are still shipping regularly. PrintedSolid, MatterHackers and PartsBuilt (and I'm sure many others) have the E3D silicone socks if you're in the US. These are resellers directly involved in our community who are struggling now and could use some business. The Amazon monolith does nothing for us and is not the only game in town.

Tried PrintedSolid: $8 in shipping! WTF. No wonder that they are struggling. $8? (That's more expensive than the item itself.)

Your second suggestion, MatterHackers, was out of stock...hard to stay in business when you have nothing to sell.

Why are these businesses struggling? Times are good for 3d Printing. Perhaps it is because of being out of stock and $8 in shipping for a 4 ounce package.

You may not like Amazon, but your statement that "they do nothing for us" has an agenda beyond selling things cheaply, quickly, and guaranteeing satisfaction. To me, as a consumer, those are valuable things.

PrintedSolid has a minimum to get free shipping, so small parts are best bundled with a larger order.

Well, Amazon isn't doing you any better at the moment. MatterHackers manages to do free shipping and be as fast as Amazon normally.

All retail is struggling in the face of Amazon.

There's another seller I can't think of who shipped the socks free, but I can't recall at the moment.

It's times like this when we realize that putting all of our eggs in one supplier's basket isn't a good idea. I try to source from multiple sources and can usually match Amazon for all but the really cheap items. I'm not saying don't buy from Amazon, but when they're out or if I'm shopping around, there are certainly other sources. I received a call today from a shop I'd ordered a spool of speciality filament from making sure I was aware of handling requirements, and wound up having a good discussion with the seller about recycling PLA. Haven't had that happen with Amazon.

@bobstro

I learn from my mistakes - I suggested Amazon as they are well equipped to deal with this type of customer and their reviews/complaints 😀

@bobstro

  1. I'm glad Amazon doesn't call me about my orders. What a hassle that would be.
  2. Amazon delivers same-day most of the time, except now when they are busy delivering toilet paper to TP hoarders.
  3. I don't wish to place a larger order. I just want the silicon socks, and feel that $8 in shipping is unnecessary when they would fit into a jiffy-pack with perhaps $2 in postage. I don't buy what I don't need and want. I don't go looking to buy things I don't want.
  4. All retail isn't struggling because of Amazon. All retail is struggling because they are not meeting the needs of customers. They charge too much for shipping, they are out of stock, they don't have what I need, and their service is poor. Let's be honest about this. In the same way, Walmart became large by giving customers what they want: large selection, efficient distribution, and a guarantee of satisfaction. And, before Walmart there was Sears who did the same thing with their catalog. And, we should not forget the printing press that drive all of those scriveners out of business. I don't form emotional bonds with companies, big or small.

Here is the latest glob to drop on my print.

Where does this stuff come from? I cleaned the nozzle and head while hot with a wire brush before printing. The print was clean. Where does this stuff come from? How does it get up there?

You have your answer and you seem satisfied with amazon as a source - did you have any additional questions about silicone socks?  Or do you just enjoy arguing?

Arguing with people who keep pressing upon me a political point ("Amazon is evil") can be fun, yes.

So back to the question at hand:

Where does this stuff come from? I cleaned the nozzle and head while hot with a wire brush before printing. The print was clean. Where does this stuff come from? How does it get up there?

Amazon isn't going to answer that any more than PrintSolid or MatterHackers is going to. That is why I am here on this forum: to ask.

If pointing out alternate sources for a product you might be interested in is political, you must not believe in the open marketplace. Competition is healthy.

Pointing out alternate sources of supply is great. Thank you.

Your bashing Amazon is political. Re-read the thread and you will see that YOU started the bashing, not me. ("The Amazon monolith does nothing for us"). YOU started gratuitously attacking Amazon for no reason related to this thread. I don't like your using this forum to bash a reliable supplier like Amazon. This forum is an inappropriate venue for you to use for your personal vendetta against Amazon. Take it to Reddit. 🙂
