Issue with first layer on support material.

Hi All,

I am trying to print a part with large overhands. I have used support material but am getting a poor surface finish on the first layer building on the support material. If you can offer any help i would appreciate it.

Regards

Dave

RE: Issue with first layer on support material.

I've had *some* success with the following:

  • smaller layers seem to be easier to peel, leaving fewer scars from the support removal process itself
  • smaller layers will also have less stair-stepping, so hopefully that will mask some of the issue as well
  • dense interface layers are essential.  I've been using 5 solid layers for dense interface
  • make the air gap as small as possible that you can still peel.
  • for whatever reason, I get better quality out of Simplify3D for big overhangs than any other slicer (except for my Cetus.  The Cetus + Up Studio slicer is a support material wizard somehow)

All that being said, this kind of extreme example will probably have some bad-looking overhangs, it sorta comes with the territory.  A little high-fill primer and some sandpaper can hide a lot of sins...

If the carnage in the photo is the bottom, it looks like the support density is lacking.  You might try variable layer heights to fill those layers to improve printer capability; and then work the separation between interface layers and part layers.  Lower separation is a mixed bag, sometimes makes it better, sometimes cause increased welding. Ensuring perimeter bridge detection is enabled and being enforced may also help.
