Help with figuring out this globbing please ...

Okay, maybe someone here can tell me what's the problem and maybe a fix?

I'm doing some 3d printed fabric, kind of a light flexible chain mail, and I've had great luck until I try to print it with silk silver PLA filament. Let me show you.

The fabric is a bunch of kind of double-H pieces, all printed separately at once and all interwoven but totally separate. Picture above shows a good print with the inside up, showing the tops of the pieces all printing as they should be. Hatchbox PETG and I get the same perfect print if I use the grey-silver than came with the printer.

However, if I print with silk silver PLA ...

... the tops of the pieces are all gloppy with plastic blocking the hooks that link the pieces together.

Here's a closer picture ...

I tried to get good and close with the pictures so you can see the problem.

Anyone know what's going on? I figure I would ask before trying this and that blindly.

Thanks everyone.

It's not that easy to tell from the photos, but I see what I think you are referring to and my first hunch is that there may be some overextrusion on the upper layers of the print.

Can you please post or link to the .stl file(s), preferably if you have one that has one singular piece.  I have a few spools of Mika3d silk metallics and I would be willing to print a test to see what it looks like on my machine.

(They really should allow follow-up editing!)

Never mind, I'm assuming it's this one here, correct?  It does appear to have a .stl for a single piece so I will try that as soon as the machine and I get a break.

Ok, here's what I get.

I used the Mika3d silk gold metallic instead of silk silver metallic because that's what I have mounted on the spool rack.  If you REALLY think it would make a difference, I'll dig out the silver and repeat it.

As you can see, it printed exactly as expected, clean smooth top layer with no globs on the top.

This was sliced with PrusaSlicer using about as vanilla and default settings as there are.  Generic PLA, 20mm layers, 15% infill, no changes at all to any of the tabs.

I was previously printing some ABS pieces, but I did let the machine cool and stabilize before doing this one.

What I would suggest as your next steps is to carefully recalibrate the Z, as wonky Z calibration can have a lot of effects.  If that does not help, my next step would be to dial down the extrusion multiplier a bit, maybe start at 95 or so.

Thanks

I assume that's in the slicer settings, right?

Yes, under the Filament Settings tab.
