First layer edge curling slightly.

I took a look through fourm quickly, forgive me if i missed an answer. My first layer seems to print nearly perfect. But some times on the turns the edges curl slightly. Then shortly after get stuck to the nozzle and the whole print is a fail. I have gone through the first layer calibration many times. And best i can tell with the video and pictures shown im getting the right layer height. I have tried mutiple prints. Changing speeds. And the only prints that print perfectly are the ones that came on the card. I have been able to print some awesome prints, but i have to make a raft to do so. I have tried a fresh clean bed, and with the glue stick. And i get the same results both ways. Ever so slight edge curl. And yes, i have used mutiple brands of pla and they all do it, even the silver prusa filament. Hopefully it is something simple that im missing.

Re: First layer edge curling slightly.

Well after alot more research i came across a small square print stl that should be .2 mm when printed. I printed it and pulled out my micrometer and it measured .2286 mm. But something i did notice while printing this file, and all of the files that came from prusa, the first layers all print incredibly slow. I have the prusa i3 mk3 profile from prusa loaded into sinplify3d and its still going faster. I read somewhere that i will have to change some script something to change this. Im a bit lost, i will post screen shots of my settings later today.

I'm not familiar with Simplify (though I imagine it's the same/similar as in Slic3r). The first layer is intentionally printed slower (and thicker--0.2mm vs. 1.5mm) than subsequent layers. Check your slicer for a first layer speed setting. 😉

my settings for the print in photos above.
i put the first layer height to 200% as suggested and dropped the speed to 30% will come back with results after.

no difference, still getting edge curling which the print head catches on randomly when printing taking the first layer with it.

I don't use Simplify 3D regularly any more, but I read up quite a bit on the settings early on. The 1st layer height question is tricky since the slicer handles it differently depending on whether you specify < 100% or > 100%:

  • If you specify < 100%, the normal (100%) amount of filament is extruded into a lower layer height. This provides a bit of additional "squish" for the 1st layer, and was generally recommended in the information I was able to find.

  • If you specify > 100%, the actual amount of material extruded is increased to maintain the layer height. The S3D online material described this as being useful when printing on an uneven surface.
  • I'd suggest trying 95% layer height for your 1st layer to see if that helps. (Trying to print thinner layers with S3D is what finally got me to jump to Slic3rPE -- the settings are a bit odd.)

As usual, make sure that bed is completely clean (a dunk under the sink with dish soap is highly recommended) and avoid touching it at all costs.

Thank you. I am printing with a reduced layer height, and increased width along with 15 degrees higher on the hot end. And sofar it is looking 100% better. Only a few very small ones in comparison. Thank you for the response.
