X Axis Problem

Hi, I've been printing with my MK3S for several months without an issue (firmware 3.8.1), 1500m and 99 print days, but this morning it  started to fail on X Axis, it was like if were on one edge but it was in the middle so i turn the printer off and on again.

Then i tried to print again and same problem so i tried to di an ZXY calibration which worked like a charm, no problem at all so tried printing again and again failed, it even had strange characters in the screen.

Reboot everything but now the printer says there's no calibration info, that i have to follow the calibration flow of the starting guide, and so i did

- SelfTest. OK

- XYZ Calibration. OK

- First Layer calibration. NOK. The problem again

A video of the first layer calibration:

I have no idea what might be going on, any help would be appreciated . Thanks 🙂

RE: X Axis Problem

Your bearings are probably binding and/or bad.

You'll need to disassemble the X axis and lubricate them properly ( https://prusacommunity.com/set-your-bearing-straight/ )

Also, you know your X motor holder is cracked, right? That could be causing the belt tension to be incorrect and slipping.

Yes, i know it's cracked, it's been for a long time but it's been working fine, just in case i had a new piece already printed. Guess it's time to change it

I'll follow the guide, thanks

I know it's not ideal and not the best way to do it but i've lubricated the rods and now it's working perfectly.

I'm printing as far as i can protective face shield's for hospital, once all the Corona Virus crisis is passed i'll disassemble the rods and do it properly.

Thanks a lot !

You'll have to stay on top of things. Just lubricating the rods gets very little into the actual bearings (most gets pushed out of the way by the seals).

Until you get a chance to do a full teardown I'd suggest staying vigilant and making sure the rods don't run dry. 🙂

What is the best way to disassemble the MK3S X axis in order to get access to the bearings.  Should I remove the Z axis top pieces to gain access to the X axis carriage or is there another way?

You will probably  need to take the Z motors out as well, in order to get enough room to remove the X axis assembly.

I just need to say thank you.  I REALLY REALLY appreciate this data as I lost hours going through the manual, reconfiguring, etc.  Never in my life would I thought about the rods and lubrication.  That fixed it though.  So many many thanks
