Wildly incorrect temperature reading: -1874 C

After completing a print this morning, the LCD readout of the hotend temp said it was at -1874 C.  It slowly corrected itself, then showed another wildly incorrect reading.  Occasionally, that row on the LCD was just blank.  I hit the "reset" button on the LCD to reset the whole printer, and it seemed to work fine again.  I've successfully printed something else (using Octoprint*), at least, without noticing another error.

Was this a one-off software hiccup, or is this indicative of some kind of hardware failure?  The printer is only a month or so old.

* Conflicting factors: Octoprint was connected when the error occurred, but I don't know how it would have affected the LCD readout.  The hard reset on the printer would have disconnected it.  I rebooted Octoprint, anyhow.

This reading is a new one for me.  See if it happens again.

I'd disconnect the RPi running Octoprint and try to determine if the problem occurs without it. If so, definitely log into the online store and contact support via chat. It's possible the display board is bad. A bad thermistor usually gives less dramatic bad temperatures. Otherwise, if it's a one-time thing, I wouldn't worry about it. I've had my display go a little bonkers after a static discharge.

@bobstro

Good point.  The bad board could do this.  That temp is well below absolute zero.

Good comments, thanks.  It's been printing non-stop since the original message, and I haven't seen the issue re-appear.  Can Octoprint "talk" to the LCD, and "write" stuff to it?  I was concerned it was hardware, because I had thought that wasn't possible.

@awilling

Did you check the logs for Octroprint?

I did check the Octoprint logs, but not sure what I should expect to find.  This is the few dozen lines that are relevant (see below).  The photo was taken at 11:17am local time, which should be close to the timestamp in the logs. Remember, I hit the soft-reset button on the LCD console shortly after the photo was taken, and then later rebooted the raspi / octopi through its own interface; both of these seem to appear at the end of the log, so if there was a logged item that illustrates the error, it should be just before this.

Is it possible that the ribbon that runs from the LCD to the Einsy was moved or slightly pinched in some way, I've had something like this happen to my MK3 after I replaced my PSU it was just ever so slightly folded over itself I released it, secured it differently and have not seen it happen again.

One problem that produces odd results with OctoPrint is the main board being back powered by the Pi via USB. To be sure this isn't an issue put tape over 5v inside the USB connector.
