RE: UPGRADE FIRMWARE OR NOT??

There have been some pretty significant fixes and enhancements since 3.6.0. If everything is working well, you certainly don't have to upgrade, but in general, I have found the upgrades to be worthwhile. Be aware that a lot has changed with Linear Advance, so if you're using that, be sure to check out the changes. The features supporting multiple sheets with separate Live-Z settings is very nice.

You can always roll back if you don't like the newer version.

@hurricanecues-com

If the printer runs fine with 3.6.0 and you don't need any other features, I would leave it as it is.

RE: UPGRADE FIRMWARE OR NOT??

I'm of the opinion that if the current version does what you want and there are no 'must have' features of a newer version, there is no need to upgrade.

In my pre-retirement life I lost count of the times that a so-called 'upgrade' had to be rolled back due to failures of the post-upgrade proof-of-performance testing (or worse) or failures when placed in production.

There is a thread on a forum for another manufacturer where there are multiple instances of a so-called upgrade 'bricking' the devices and requiring a service call to straighten it out.

First rule of upgrades: Don't do it!

Second rule of upgrades: Don't do it just yet.

@jsw

If it ain't broken, don't fix it 😉

Best advice I even got in my early days of being an engineer.

(Not that I have always followed that advice) 😉

Tank you very much!

I'm in the same boat. Original Mk3.

RE: UPGRADE FIRMWARE OR NOT??

Carry out a factory reset of the printer when you upgrade firmware, especially such a large jump in versions or your printer will probably act weird.

This is a limitation of the hardware and memory allocation and basically results in garbage data being left where it shouldn't be. I had the exact same, weird things happening the first time I upgraded the firmware on my printer and ended up rolling it back until I tried the factory reset which clears down all the memory where settings etc are stored.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

RE: UPGRADE FIRMWARE OR NOT??

how does it work when using old gcode? if you have been running with an older linear advance, then upgrade the firmware and print the old gcode, does it compensate for the changes or you need new gcode?

@islander2013

Linear Advance 1.5 is also backward compatible with version 1.0. In case you have a G-code with Linear Advance 1.0, the printer will analyze the code and convert the values automatically.
