Thermistor wires cut (MINTEMP error

Hi,

I use the 3D printer in a relatively public space in my university laboratory, someone used the printer without permission and clogged the extruder head with filament. They obviously didn't know the procedure to try and clear the blockage and ended up cutting the wire that I think measures the hot end's temperature. I have done a quick fix of stripping away the wire and twisting them together to connect them. This is very temperamental and results in large fluctuation in hot end temperature readings and has now resulted in the MINTEMP error.

Is there a more permanent fix like being able to buy new wires or taking the hot end out and rewiring etc. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Guy Sutherland

Unfortunately given the temperature that the hotend gets to soldering is not practical as the solder will soften/melt.  That is why those wires are crimped.  The easiest is to buy a replacement thermistor and fit it.

Buy a couple of spares while your at it in case it happens again.  Also fit a silicone sock to the hot end to help prevent problems in future (and dont forget to run PID tuning if you do fit one).

Of course, only praticable if not to close to the heaterblock. But i would prefer to buy a replacement and only use the soldered as a temporary solution.

If you have enough wire to strip you can knot them together.

It's an old lineman trick, and double knot, granny or reef, will secure and give plenty of surface area.

Cheers all, can anyone do me a favour and confirm if this is the thermistor wire or not, just before i go ahead and purchase a new one. The broken wire is the bare copper wire seen in the photos. If its not clear from photos let me know and ill take more, cheers in advance! 🙂

@towlerg

I've heard of the linemen that have been using this knot for over a hundred years. How does it work? A forgotten old technology?

the thin wires with the white insulation in your pictures are the thermistor wires...

they are currently in stock at Prusa
