Strange Extruder Sounds

Hi folks,

As much as I love my Prusa, I have to hate it from time to time.

My current problem is that the extruder makes kind of squeaking noises with occasional skipped steps noted by tiny flaws in the print and a clicking sound (see video and picture).

I already checked the spring tension, removed the filament cap and reseated the Bondtech gears - with no success.

Any idea where that comes from all of a sudden?

Thanks
Jan

Re: Strange Extruder Sounds

Update: That print that I posted a picture of the first layer resulted in cardinal extrusion problems. So I decided to cancel the print and check the extruder and hot end for problems.

I took apart the hot end and removed a major clog in the heat break which might be caused by me removing the nozzle but keeping the hot end at 240 C for a few minutes after I removed the nozzle.

I also checked the Bondtech unit but couldn't find anything unusual.

What I also noticed is that filament came out between the heater block and the cooling body. I think this happened with the last print before the noise occurred. The print had several clogs due to bad filament from Prusa. I think this cause the filament being pushed through between the nozzle and the heat break.

Having everything reassembled and correctly fastened I began with some simple PLA job and the noise is still there but maybe a little bit less loud. The print quality is still sub average but Z has not yet been recalibrated thoroughly. And I still have skips in the extruder.

Since my whole E3D V6 did not look too good I ordered a new one and will see if that helps.

Still would be interested in thoughts on my current problems...

Re: Strange Extruder Sounds

Found the reason for the strange sounds and the underextrusion: The passive Bondtech gear scraped against the hatch. It was the axis which is not very long and had to be recentered.

I guess I now have a replacement E3D V6... 🙄

Re: Strange Extruder Sounds

The extruder-idler printed part has no tolerance between the idler's drive teeth and the printed part. If you have a couple of spare nylon washers I suggest you replace it with my part instead.

Extruder Idler W2.stl
Extruder Idler W2.dwg

The whole for the bearing shaft is very tight and will need slight reaming with a circular file or drill bit. Do not over ream as it is ment to be tight.

Martin

Thank you, Martin. That looks interesting and I will definitely try that out.

But I don't think that this will fix the problem, as it seemed that the shaft got misplaced and tilted and caused the gears to grind against the part. Recentering helped. I think a longer shaft would fix the problem.
