Chatted it up with tech support, which is really freaking outstanding, and determined that all is okay. Needed a manual z-calibration. All good now. Back to printing.
Seems like a firmware puzzlement. Support promised to poke firmware in eye for my grief.
It said it was doing z-calibration - like 100 times. Only the manual z-calibration cleared it.

Well, I am annoyed. The problem is back. And, I am printing for money. Not happy.

Cold boot, manual z-calibration, back in business. Nothing changed but the time of day.
