Slic3r PE Generated Supports / Overhang Threshold question

Very new to printing, and I am trying to print something which probably has (maybe?) a 60 degree angle to it. However, the supports generated for the object seems excessive to me, and I wonder if there is a setting or something I'm doing wrong which is giving me unneeded supports.

When I click the "Generate Support Material" box and change the threshold to something extreme and clearly beyond the angle of the print - in the case below 89 degrees - and then click "Slice Now" it still generates a significant amount of support - about the same level of supports as what I put on a 30 degree, 55 degree, or any other angle. (This is regardless of whether I do the drop down box in the Plater tab as "Everywhere" or "Support on Build Plate Only."

Does anyone know why this might be? I want to minimize the supports needed of course while still having adequate supports in place.

Also, on a related question, I have read that setting the threshold to 0/zero will auto generate the supports only where Slic3r thinks I need them - however, even when putting 0/zero in, I still get the same level of supports as any other value.
