RE: slic32r: understanding supports

Another question regarding supports. I already understand the contact Z distance setting & have been using that with some success. But I'm not sure about the xy separation. How is the % parameter used? The default 50% doesn't seem to make any sense & the description in Slic3r isn't any help. Maybe I should just enter xy separation in mm? I have some delicate vertical features that are surrounded by supports. They're getting damaged when I remove the supports.

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do with all your might!

RE: slic32r: understanding supports

The Prusa Slicer Facebook group is full of questions about supports with all sorts of odd behaviours shown. I've played for hours on some prints with support enforcers and blockers and often failed to get satisfactory results, oversized interface layers in XY plane are favourite challenge. I think it needs some love from the devs and some documentation might help a lot too. Basically I just revert to S3D if it needs supports - it's far more intuitive, simple and works.

You can specify XY distance as a percentage or absolute value (in mm). If set as percentage, it specifies a percentage of the support extrusion width (IIRC). I'm using 75% with good results, mostly using a 0.25mm nozzle and correspondingly thin extrusions.

Thanks for that - had a play with various settings, the only problem with it is it affects both the bed support layer on the bottom of the supports and the top layer where it contacts the part. They really need separate settings to avoid the pattern being imprinted in the bottom or on the edge of the part in some situations. I'll pass on the information to the facebook group, with due kudos to you. It may help with some of the problems. Thanks again for your help.
