Simplify3D print issues

OK, so I have been having a fit as of late with Simplify3D and printing objects. I slice them, send to the printer, and things start out ok, but then it knocks them loose during the print, so i have to cancel the job. If I slice with Slic3r Prusa Edition, and try, they print out without issue. Anyone know what is going on with Simplify3D?

I previously had it working, but had to remove it and reinstall and since then, it is failing like this on everything I've tried to print.

I am using all the defaults, and printing in PLA, so should be pretty standard and easy.

Re: Simplify3D print issues

Hi Bob, have you got any pictures of the first layer, and last layer?

is your extrusion multiplier greater than 0.95?
Slic3r is reduced to 95% flow in the start gcode for layer heights above 0.075mm

No pictures, the prints get to random places in them, then knock something loose and start printing in air and have to be killed using the default S3D settings, but with Slic3R they continue on and complete. First layers are fine, and the point at which they fail is random and it is random for which piece gets knocked loose (3 items all assembled into one print). This used to work, but since the reinstall and reconfiguration, whatever mods I made previously, I can't recall and they seem to be needed. Was hoping someone might be able to point mt in the right places of what needs changed.

Re: Simplify3D print issues

Hi Bob,

without seeing what's going on, it's difficult to suggest what the issue might be

you could be suffering
contamination of the heat bed surface,
Poor live Z adjustment,
Curling prints, and / or
over extrusion

to name few possibilities!

as we have pretty much nothing to go on,
I suggest that you give your heatbed a good clean, using dish detergent and clean water, wiping dry with kitchen roll,
then, if you are confident that your Live Z settings are good, start a new print, while it is running, it would help if you could photograph the first layer, and say third layer of your new print
then share them with us please

regards Joan

I understand what you are saying, but the same heatbed works when printed to from Slic3R PE, but fails when printed to from S3D. I have cleaned it, checked the live Z setting, and it still fails from S3D,, only. There is no curling, or lifting of any corners, or

Again, the only thing changing is the software which slices the items.

I will look to see if I can get some pictures, but the same printer works from Slic3R PE, and fails from S3D.

Re: Simplify3D print issues

You didn't answer Joan on the extrusion multiplier question from her first response. S3D default for Prusa MK3 is 1.0, Slic3r is 0.95. I found I had to reduce S3D setting to 0.9 for some prints to be successful where dimensions, tolerances and clearances were important, so I support Joan's thinking.

Re: Simplify3D print issues

In my now-2 month adventure with 3D printing, I've realized that a lot of slicer software attempts to duplicate setting functionality that the printer provides. In particular, you can make z-level adjustments in software and directly on the printer. I realized at one point I was trying to fix problems by making too many changes, so have decided to make all hardware-level adjustments on the printer directly, and relegate slicer adjustments to issues with specific prints. Is it possible that you've made z-offset or other adjustments in both Simplify 3D *and* on the printer?

I had a similar issue using Cura. No issues printing ol' Benchy with Simplify 3D, Slic3r or PrusaControl, but the gcode generated with Cura on the same STL file would consistently knock the model loose when starting on the doorway arches. I haven't re-tried that print, but I'm avoiding hardware-level adjustments in my slicer software now.

Another thing I've learned is to simply slow things down to get things working, then gradually speed back up. I've read that infill speeds in particular can affect the height of the material, leading to mid-print scraping. Rectilinear infill and slower speeds seem to be the fix. Try manually dialing speeds back to 80% during the print to see if it works. If so, you know where to start looking.

Re: Simplify3D print issues

Hi,

once you are looking into the print preferences, pls. also check under Cooling at what layer the Fan is activated in Simplify.
Slic3r PE starts cooling from layer 3. This coul also be a problem as well as the heatbed temperature itself, for PLA it should be 60°C.
Also Slic3r has a little bit higher temperature for the first layer.

It would be helpfull to show pictures showing your Process setting pages at least for: Extruder. Layer, Temperature (herr pls. both values for heatbed and Extruder) and for Speeds.

Otherwise I could send you my Simplify Process file later on in the evening if you would like to have it.

Yes, I would like to have your S3D settings for the Prusa.

I am using an Extruder setting of 1,0 in Simplify3D, for those who asked.

I will try this again tonight if I get a chance, and let you know what else I find, and if I can get some pictures taken of the process.

Also Z-Hopping ("retraction vertical lift" in S3D) sometimes help to prevent "knock overs" while travelling.

Here is my S3D MK3 LA Profile. Note the picture of the printed XYZ calibration cube was printed with this S3D profile with a reverse bowden setup which reduces some of the over extrusion issue. Depending on your printers calibration you may or may not need to tweek the multipler slightly up or down Let me know if it works for you
