Nozzle keeps catching on paper during XYZ calibration.

My printer has been fine for  months, but today it kept failing prints. I checked what was going on and I saw that the nozzle is crashing into the bed - I could see the print bed getting pushed down. I reset and tried to recalibrate, but during the step what you put a sheet of paper under the nozzle while it checks the calibration point, the nozzle eventually gets so low that it catches on the paper and starts dragging it around, so I switch off the printer.

I checked the handbook but apart from telling me to turn off the printer there wasn't anything in there about what could cause this or how to fix it. What could be going on here, and what should I do?
