Now what is THIS problem?

I'm about at the end of my rope with having to tear this thing apart on every other print to fix it, especially since I've only managed to get less than a half dozen prints so far during the first 2 weeks of ownership. Most of the problems are extruder jams, but there have certainly been other issues as well. Is this typical????

So the current problem is with a print I did successfully before it broke down again two days ago will no longer print. It stops about every minute now and prompts me to remove filament for no apparent reason, then reinsert. It then goes on for another few seconds and repeats the prompt to remove filament/reinsert filament.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem is?

Turn off the filament sensor in settings until you figure out what is wrong with it.

It is amazing Prusa has such a time with filament sensor code.

In all honesty, I would put in down more to design than firmware.

That sensor flag seems to catch on any rough spot, and I suspect the shape is not optimal.

The problem is often fixed by removing the sensor and cleaning up any rough bits on flag or housing.

And don't tighten the retaining screws too much...

That filament sensor is junk, I already had to file a bit off of the edge of it to get it to ever pass light through to the sensor, I guess I need to take more off. I hate having to constantly take that extruder apart to fix and unclog it. Sooner of later I'm going to head out in the field behind my house with the Prusa and a sledge hammer and have myself a nice mental health day.

The "new" filament sensor design and all the reported issues with it is one reason I haven't yet used my MK3S upgrade kit. Why something like this wasn't used is a curiosity.

And I guess they thought that the use of eddy currents to push the flag open rather than a simple spring was really cool, but they overlooked the fact the motor has its own magnetic field. It took me a bit of time to figure out why the light sensor always worked properly when the motor was off and gave an erroneous reading as soon as the motor was attached to the extruder.

Can I swap the Prusa for a Geeetech i3 Pro B,     you still get the  impact therapy, and I may be able to get the printer working satisfactorily!

🙂

RE: Now what is THIS problem?

Hi @steve_cranage

I would say your problem is not exceptional but neither typical. I have assembled my MK3S myself and after more then half a year still no issues even with semi transparent filaments. As I followed the installation manual very carefully it took me almost 3 days to build it. Especially regarding the filament sensor where there was a note to put in the magnet in with correct orientation and correct position and orientation of the plug to put in the motherboard.

Did this issue appear from the beginning or later on? This info could help us with imagination, what could happen.

Would be great if you could share with us which brand of filament  did those troubles. For some of them the filament sensor is allergic.

Many people here are responsive and willing to help for free, providing them by as much as possible info can help to identify the issue.

Your printer (if bought factory assembled) should be under warranty so ask for filament senzor replacement. Did you check the sensor function according to manual?

even an old man can learn new things 🙂
